Because cola was a drug in his timeline and if he had cola he would get arrested
Simple.

But he could stay in the pass until he was ready to go back to the his timeline.
Another simple answer.

Did I defeat you using pure logic?...

No.
This wasnt a competition.
Plus, my comment had logic aswell.

I think there's more than that if he stayed in the past than the people from the future would find him and arrest him so killing himself would prevent him being captured , Second according to the beginning of a friend story that ed wanted kill himself was not just cola losing his friends, tom and matt to red leader who took over the world A.K.A Tord and loosing his pet ringo thus leading him to depression another reason to wanting to kill himself

That or change the past so cola isn't outlawed. Then again soda isn't good for you, it cause diabetes and it can cause cancer because cancer grows in acidic ph but not alkaline ph. So drink water. I'm not saying outlaw it, just have smaller bottles of soda. I mean really some people drink one of those huge bottles of soda everyday.

He also could have killed his current self. Then he wouldnt have to go back in time at all.
