The pony in the background is Scarlet "Zara" Shadow, who was originally created by my friend Jay.

---------------------------------------

He could hardly breathe anymore. It felt like his lungs were shriveling away and turning to dust in real-time. He didn't think he could run any farther. His legs felt as weak and useless as his lungs did, the constant tightening and burning sensation in his muscles reminding him of the threat that he may collapse at any given moment. But still he persisted, his scaly little feet pounding away as fast as he could still carry them, a hefty trail of dust clouds billowing behind him in one big easy-to-follow trail as he sped through Ponyville. Many ponies casted worried looks at him as he whizzed by, but no one dared to try and chase him down to find out what could scare one of Equestria's heros so badly.

Spike turned a corner into an alley he'd been wanting to hide in since this whole ordeal first began back at Sugarcube corner. He rounded the corner of one of the hoofful of buildings there, slowing to a stop at the bricked-off dead end. He took a much-needed deep breath, a desperate, dramatic gasp ringing out as he inhaled as much air as his little lungs could possibly hold. He let it all out as he fell to his knees, his entire body going slack from exhaustion. His head hung limp, along with his shoulders. He closed his eyes and wiped away a few beads of sweat from his forehead and face, opening his eyes again and staring at the ground as his more tangible thoughts and fears raced to the front of his mind and out of his mouth; thoughts and fears he could put words to. "I thought I'd never get far enough away!" He exclaimed in a shrill, shaking voice. Lowering his volume a bit, he contniued emptying his pent up feelings. "That Scarlet... Those eyes... If only I could explain to Twilight - to ANYONE what it FEELS like for her to look at me like that..."

The boy leaned back and curled his legs towards himself, raising up enough to sit on his heels and rest his knees on the ground. He hunched forward a bit, his muscles still trembling and frail from having ran for so long and so forcefully. "It's almost like-like she's trying to control my mind, or s-something." He said aloud, oblivious to the sound of distantly approaching hoofsteps from down the street. "It wouldn't be so frickin' scary if it DIDN'T feel like she could do it! But it DOES - it DOES feel like she can do it! The longer she looks at me the worse I feel. It always starts to feel like I'm-like I'm starting to-"

"-There you are, Spikes!~"

"-lose... control..."

Spike trailed off after he was interrupted by a voice... a voice he'd just heard a short few minutes ago. The voice that caused him to come here. The voice of the one who'd let her mask slip. The one who seemed to pervade Spike's very cognition.

The boy froze. His eyes went wide, his whole body seizing as he forced himself to shakily stand and turn around.

There she was.

"I was starting to think you were leaving town or something!" Zara cooed in her sickly-sweet, always-much-too-loud voice. It always sounded like she forced every single nice thing she ever said. "What'd you have to go and run all the way out here for, ya silly goose? Ahah-!" She choked out a strange, hiccup-y laugh.

The young dragon backed away, as if intending to escape the unicorn, who leisurely continued pacing towards him.
Spike knew the wall was behind him. He know he couldn't escape. But he had nowhere to go. He let his instincts take the reigns from there. He feebly let himself put the puniest bit of distance between the mare, while he thought of how to explain this to Twilight later.

---------------------------------

I originally drew this back around 2021, I think.

The short excerpt above will likely not be used in the Brownies series in the future. I had just found this Spike base a long time ago, and wanted to do something with him and Zara. I'll admit, as far as the series goes, this scene makes little sense in the grand scheme of things. I just came up with it on the spot now, so I wrote it out for fun. I DO want them to have a confrontation - probably many of them. But not like this.
