she is not a unicorn, she don't have a horn in her forehead.

And by the way unicorns are an endangered species, hunting them is strictly forbidden, the last ones are in the far away and magical land of India

Unicorns are part fae. They are not recognized as endangered, they are recognized as mythological, and you can't find them on Earth covered by GPS, GSM and Wifi. Indian rhinoceros are not unicorns - well, not the unicorns most people mean.

rphbrphb In reply to hkmaly [2025-04-07 14:12:44 +0000 UTC]

that is because most people don't know what the word really mean. The original meaning of the word which is among others used in the bible refers to unicorns and bicorns are the indian 1 rhinoserous and the African 2 horned one. Doing the middle ages we lost contact with much of the outside world due to the Muslim scourge thus the knowledge of the wildlife of Africa and India was both lost, and the closest equivalent animal we knew was the horse

Re'em is not unicorn, although it was mixed up with it in 16th century. That said, Greeks assumed unicorn is real animal and reinventing it as mythological one seems to be relative late thing.

rphbrphb In reply to hkmaly [2025-04-08 06:01:39 +0000 UTC]

that is because as I said, it is a real animal. it was as I said a rhinoceros.

The ancient Greeks, unlike the people of the middle ages, knew about India

Siiiigh ... why I'm still surprised by your inability to accept uncertainty.

Unicorn being based on rhinoceros is definitely a possibility, but it's also definitely not something so clear you can say unicorn IS rhinoceros.

For example, unicorn horns are narwhal tusks.

Similarly, there is high likehood that dinosaur bones contributed to legends about dragons, but that doesn't classify dragons as dinosaurs.

First of all it is nice to hear from thee again, I always enjoy our little conversations, how art thou?

it is rather clear when reading the ancient description of these animals.

The naval horns part came after the unicorn = horse + horn mythos came into being. It is why the ancient stories always had a unicorns and bicorns jumped together. today people rarely talk about bicorns. The few myths that feature them refer to them as a sort of evil unicorn, (as if animals could be good or evil).

Regarding dragons.

I have always found them fascinating, they are as far as I know the only mythological creature that have been independently imagined by 3 different civilisations. Most mythological beings are very culture specific, but dragons are universal.

I think it is because dragons personify our greatest fears. Snakes, fire, large birds of pray. they are all of the worst things we can imagine joined into one being.

They are the greatest challenge one can overcome, the beast of chaos that the primordial culture hero have to vanquish in the underworld

The bones are testament of these ancient battles. hail st George, the last dragonslayer

> how art thou?

Busy. That's why I'm not continuing our previous conversations.

> it is rather clear when reading the ancient description of these animals.

Greek description of unicorn is closest to cow.

> by 3 different civilisations

I think it was MORE. On the other hand, there was also more than one kind of dragons.

Saw a video about it actually. Said something like that dragons lumped together multiple legends because they were defined in way which made their actual look secondary.

Note that the similarity between snakes and dragons is not that universal, there are water dragons ... but what dragons have common is they are dangerous, apex predators, yes, greatest challenge.

> st George, the last dragonslayer

"Last" you say ... the dragonslaying was actually previously attributed to Saint Theodore Tiro.
