My current speculation is that it allows who ever enters the portal into the purple void will turn into a human if they think about becoming a human, turn into a centaur if they think about becoming a centaur, turn into a mermaid if they think about becoming a mermaid...

Maybe it'll wear off in a few hours and her tail will return?
Maybe she mutated on the way out and now she's a Splash-type mermaid?
Maybe she lost a part of her soul in there and has to retrieve it to stay alive?
Maybe she stays human, but still has recursive "mermaid genes" hidden in her genomic map that will impact all her future daughters, resulting in all her female progeny being mermaids while her male progeny being human carriers of the mermaid gene.

Hmmm..... let's just say I am rather skeptical at this outcome. Though she has her old self back, she is also out of the new job opportunities that it came with. Also, why would the portal fix mermaids and not centaurs.
Also, that picture title implies more things to come. Yeah, not yet sold on this magic recovery :)
And also, apart from all the drawbacks, centaurs at least come with an upgrade in the booty department. That's a good reason to keep it... right?

Totally the first thing that came to my mind the moment I first saw this.
And while it is a be careful what you wish for situation, Chloe is far more at fault than Lynne.
Lynne did not impulsively jump right in, Chloe leaned her in too close, a contrast to what the centaur would have done. Hers was accidental, too, but she'd have leapt right in without intent to come back without the chance to think it over if she knew the immediate result right off.

Take a close look at the third panel on this page:
Lynne's hand is just inside the purple glow. Lynne was leaning over to point at it, and she accidentally stuck her hand in it, just like Chloe did two chapters ago. And look at where Lynne's tail and dress are: She's curled all the way up, way off-balance. Chloe was standing safely in the hallway at least a couple of feet away: Lynne falling into the portal was mostly her own doing.
Arguably, Chloe's still somewhat at fault for bringing Lynne there in the first place, and Chloe may have been intending to take Lynne into the portal with her: But you can see that Lynne actually entered the portal all on her own.
