I was glad when an animal like the tanoomba showed up in M&L, proving Nintendo hasn't entirely forgotten about the tanooki (although I wish a REAL tanooki would make anouther apperance in a Mario game. Or atleast the racoon leaf power up...) Looking at the tanoomba you think about how such a creature came to be. The most logical guess being that a goomba and a tanoo-.......eww. Never mind.

No silly, it's a Goomba wearing a Tanooki Suit, like Mario did in SMB3.
Although for the record hybridization isn't gross.

That was one of my favorite enemies in the game. 
(Mario & Luigi were at a lower-level, I was still early in the game at the time.)
I hope they include enemies like them in "M&L2: Partners in Time." (Wich is out now for DS)
