Description
Belgium was tired of everyone saying that she was boring, that she was only good for waffles and chocolate. She needed to get a new hobby, an interesting hobby. Something that would finally show everyone else that she was just as exciting as any other country. And that was why she'd arranged to meet up Liechtenstein and Hungary, to show them her new passion which she hoped would finally make her stand out just a bit more."Magic?" said Liechtenstein, as Belgium proudly showed off the old, tattered book of magic tricks which she managed to find for just a few euros. "Like... pulling rabbits out of hats and stuff? I don't know... It seems a little... tacky?"
"Tacky?" said Belgium, slightly taken aback. "What? No! It's fun! Making cards dissappear, sawing people in half, making stuff float in the air! I'll wow them all! I won't be boring old Belgium anymore, I'll be... The Amazing Belgium!"
"The... Amazing Belgium? Um, okay... if you say so..." said Liechtenstein, seeing that her friend had stars in her eyes and wasn't really interested in her opinion.
"Magic, huh?" said Hungary, snatching the book out of Belgium's hands. "We've got some history of that back home, you know? That Houdini guy? He was one of mine. Yeah, I'd probably be pretty good at this magic stuff if I tried..."
"Um, Hungary? Be careful with that!" said Belgium, staring in alarm as her friend leafed roughly through the old tome. "The guy in the shop said that that's a very rare book...!"
"What language is this in?" said Hungary, ignoring Belgium's concerns, staring at the spidery, indecipherable gothic characters on the musty pages. "Are these magic words, or something? Maybe Liechtenstein's right, it does all seem a bit tacky. I mean, listen to this..." Rolling her eyes, waving her hands in a mocking fashion, she read out one of the scrawls on the page in an over-the-top dramatic kind of voice. No sooner had she finished speaking, though, than the three girls were engulfed in a puff of thick, pink smoke.
When the smoke faded though, there were no longer three young women standing there, but, in their place, were three small, fluffy white rabbits. Three rabbits which stared at each other, then at themselves, squeaking in shock and horror. They tried to speak to one another, to work out exactly what had happened, but their buck-toothed mouths could no longer form human words, only a sequence of high-pitched squeaks. Even without the power of speech, though, it was obvious to the three of them what had caused this rodent predicament. The book! Who would have thought that there was real magic in those pages? Still, it should be simple enough to reverse, shouldn't it? All they had to do was find and invoke the counter-spell right? It might be difficult nwo that they had no voices or hands, but they'd find a way to make it work.
Hungary. She was the one who'd said the spell that got them into this mess, so the rabbits who had been Liechtenstein and Belgium turned on the formerly-Hungary bunny to see if she still had the book. She didn't. Her new paws were as empty as theirs. The three, new fluffy-tailed rodents started to panic now. They needed that book. They hopped awkwardly, unused to their current forms, around the spot where Hungary had been standing when she was still human. Where the book should have fallen when they'd transformed. But they couldn't find anything, not until Belgium hopped into a thick pile of ashes, her pink nose twitching as it rose up and got caught in her new whiskers. Ashes that contained scraps of scorched paper, which contained fractions of a barely-legible germanic scrawl.
It was the book. Or, at least, it had been. Apparently, that last blast of magic had been too much for the ancient tome to handle and it had simply disintengrated in Hungary's hands whilst they changed into a rabbit's paws. The girls-turned-bunnies were pawing through the pile of useless ash in a desperate panic, trying to piece together a spell. Any spell that could change them back. But it was no good and, before long, a gust of strong wind rose up that twitched the rabbit's new whiskers and blew the remains of the book away. The new bunnies collapsed onto their back paws in despair, each lost in their own thoughts. Was this it? Were they stuck like this? Forever? Would they have to spend the rest of their lives gnawing on raw carrots, digging through farmer's fields and always on the lookout for the sight of an approaching, hungry fox? Maybe they should go find a nice little kid to take them in. Being a pet had to be a better life than the fear of ending up as something's dinner, right?
