Description This is a mini tutorial on how I do draw soldier type character while using Paint Tool Sai, the great thing about drawing on a computer software is that you make as many redos as you want until you can get it right.

Step 1: Make a rough sketch of the character, you can do it however you like - stick figuring, outlining, etc

Step 2: Open a new layer, label it "linework" turn the opacity of the rough sketch layer to about 30% (this will turn the rough sketch semi transparent), go back to the new layer and then start refining the linework of the character. Using the now semi transparent rough sketch layer as a foundation

Step 3: Repeat step 2 and further refine the linework, this will be the final linework that you will be working with for the rest of the piece. Once you are done refining the linework and is totally satisfied, label the layer "final linework" and move on to the next step

Step 4: Open a new layer underneath the linework layer and label it "shade", set layer filter to "Multiply", select gray color and start filling in the shade.

Step 5: Open a new layer underneath the shade layer and label it "undershade", set the opacity to around 30% and brush density to 30% as well. Select a really light gray and start filling in the shade. Turning the opacity/brush density level to 30% allows you to blend in a lighter shade without overpowering the shade layer

Step 6: Open yet another layer undeaneath the undershade layer and label it "color", keep the original setting and start filling in the colors

Step 7: Open a final layer underneath the color layer and label it "camo", go to Google image and start looking for stock photo of camo (the higher the resolution, the better), save image, open it on PTS, select and copy the camo image, go back to character artwork, paste the image, erase excess until the camo image fits within the character.

Step 8: Open (yup again) a layer on top of the final linework layer and label it "misc", this is where you can add misc. stuff like Unit/ID/Flag patches

And done, perform any necessary adjustment and you are all set.
