Description I am at a loss on what to title this as. Started out as a pure poser-play piece as I found those tentacles and never used them before so gave them a whirl. Just a little tricky moving them into place but not too bad, and then came the texturing challenge, had to create the flesh for them. Hopefully she doesn't look like she has some kind of disease :) (Smile)

I like how she turned out and if you're thinking I've seen those tentacles before, I do believe that a Star Wars creature called a twi'lek used to wear them. But I'm going to spin this character into a non-scifi outfit and see how that turns out :) (Smile)

Clothing, texture & skin texture: Renderosity
Figure: V4
Tentacles: ShareCG: "lekku"

Very neat. And yeah, I have a fascination with tails and head-tentacles, and they are a lot of "fun" to play with. Wait until you've created a character with all sorts of danglies and then you decide to use her for a whole series of story images. :D (Big Grin)

LOL I had to postwork her texture designs on her head...I don't really relish the idea of creating a whole series with her. That's a lot of work. I tried to create a texture in PS and use it in Poser but it came out stretched in places and just looked horrible. So I said screw it, I'll do it in postwork.

Yeah, there would be an easier way to do that. You'd have to play around with the 2D textures for the lekku. I used to use PSP8 to cut a color swath from the characters body skin and use that swath to texture the lekku. I need to figure out how to do it with Gimp now though I suppose. Playing with the texture template would yield better results than my way even, but I still don't quite have a handle on those.

Every so often I get the urge to try doing a continuing story with some of my characters, but I'm not very good at plot development. :D (Big Grin)

Oh I got the tentacle covered in the skin texture, the pattern on the skin is where I had to manually do it in Photoshop, thankfully I used brushes, I think giraffe pattern, but had to erase some, so lots of layers was used. Fun, but I couldn't see myself doing that for a comic series. I'd want to pull my eyes out. I tried making a texture for Poser but the spots came out ugly and stretched. Again it boils down to patience, and lots of time, of which I have a limited supply. If I reduced my spots in size, they might have come over better, but that means lots of PS time, Poser time, and after a while I'll either grow tired of it and move on to something else, or get so pissed off at it, I still move on :) (Smile)

I seem to build my stories in outline form, very few get written pages. Maybe I need to do my stories in a graphic novel like production, if I had the patience to stay with it, or the concentration needed for it, I have a lack of patience and I get side tracked easily. My folder of stories tell the tales of that.

And the lack of patience issue is exactly why I know nothing about any 2D software. It's taken me about eight years to reach the level of ineptness I have with DAZ. :D (Big Grin)

Layers. Nothing to them. Once you see they are not as intimidating as they appear. When I first got PS I like layers? That is so far above my skill level. But once I learned that layers were exactly that, layers I was like that is so easy and OH this is SO cool!

Imagine them to be like those picture books where you could flip a page over and now you have a face, flip another page and you've hair, add another page and now the figure is dressed. All together they form a picture, but separately they are a layer of the final image. Layers are exactly that. I still don't know everything about layers, I can stack my images up and change the layer setting for each one and I can make a drab image suddenly have more color and all I did was change the settings on the layers.

I tinkered with Gimp for a little bit because I was told Gimp could use PS brushes. My old copy of PS bit the dust. Adobe will only allow you to move your copy to like 3 computers in its lifetime. So after 3 upgrades my 4th computer upgrade I needed a new version of PS. So that's when I tried Gimp, but I didn't mess around with it much to assist you with it. Adobe was giving away a low number release of their creative suite a few months back, I can't remember if it included a photoshop. It is a wonderful tool but I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do.

I also do photography and I've discovered the healing brush...floored me. You can remove pretty much anything out of an image and PS will replace it with what it thinks would be there. In my case I took a pic of a tree trunk with autumn leaves around it. Final image showed I had 2 twigs on 2 corners of the image, out of focus and kind of distracting. Cropping them out really took the focus of the image away. I tried the healing brush and it removed the twig and filled in with an extended version of a leave that was behind the twig.

I grow impatient with some things and others I have a fair amount of patience. I still drag out my templates and try and make textures for my characters and end up using PS to convert already created textures to try and create what I want/need. Xari was that way, messing around with you've guessed it, layers. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't do some kind of postwork on my images.

I understand the concept of layers, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to implement them. :) (Smile)

I used to use Paint Shop Pro 8 (PsP8), but the install got corrupted and it wouldn't load, and I couldn't find the install disk again for a couple years. So I started puttering with Gimp, I couldn't even figure out how to crop a portion off of a texture to re-use in Gimp. In PsP8 you could crop and paste as a new image a portion of another image. I used that trick to pull portions of a character skin so I could create a skin-swatch to use for lekku and so on.

I am the same way about patience usually. If I feel like I'm making headway I can be immensely obsessive, but if I feel like I'm not really getting anywhere I'll lose interest and move onto another project. If I start with an idea, then run out of steam and can't figure out how to proceed I'll save my progress in the hopes of returning later and then move on. Most of the time I never ever return to the project.

Implement them? As in?

Gimp is very closely based on PS if I remember it right. It has been a long time ago since I used it. I'm sure cropping would be the same in PS it was the + icon that you clicked on and them held the mouse key and dragged over the selection you wanted then either copied to paste in another or select crop from a drop down menu and in PS it was found in the Image drop down.

I am assuming PS = Photo Shop? I never used that. I had Paint Shop Pro 8, and I never really understood it much beyond using it to change file format types so I could change a .png into a .jpg or something. And using the copy and paste-as-new-image to create skin swatches. I get the concept of creating and using layers, but I have no idea how to do it. I couldn't even find a "paste-as-new-image" button, just the one to paste INTO an image, which left me with my swatches in the corner of a huge blank sheet. I also usually learn by puttering around, but I couldn't find anything anywhere in Gimp that did anything with layers. But I might have given up too soon.

I have had so many bad experiences with screwing up my entire system by playing with a piece of software that I get nervous about just trying buttons on anything new. I much prefer having somebody around I can ask questions of, when I have some. I never even know where to START looking in tech manuals for my questions. :D (Big Grin)

Most manuals if not all of them were written by experts who do not know how to talk to the common folk. My brother works in IT and my experiences with IT where I work, they are a bunch of anti social people. they don't communicate outside to the general public when something goes down/wrong. You call and they answer gruffly, yes there are problems with the server. There is a spot on the employee web page just for them post such things but they don't use it. Leaves us thinking are we the only ones this is happening to, or is it widespread?  I think they do it on purpose so they get phone calls, craving attention. Or they come into the work place with their boxes of gadgets and they don't say anything to anyone. They do their thing and then they leave.

When you do ctrl alt delete and pull up the task manager, under processes...why is it so hard to have common, mundane descriptions for things on what each item is for. There have been several times I've looked in there and freaked out thinking I've got some virus and I have to google what I've seen to find out oh it's part of this program.

Yeah, about half the time I am one of "those people" - the other half the time I'm either focused on something I don't want to be distracted from, or desperate for human contact. :D (Big Grin)

I know, I'm always doing the same thing. I run Task Manager as a constant companion to everything else running on my machine, so that when things start to lag I can see why and kill the dragging process if I need to. MOST of the time it's the new DA placeholder for the ads and crap. But I like that I can kill that and force it to restart rather than having to kill Firefox to do the same.

I like iTunes to play my almost 50ggs of music, but every time I update they reinstall their support services for everything else. I don't have an iPod, iPad, or any of that other crap, so why do I need to have constantly-running support apps for all of it? WHY don't they give me the option to NOT INSTALL all of it every time? I hate having to update iTunes, then uninstall all of that crap every single time. Half the time I think they decide I need to update just because I uninstalled all of those other useless apps. It seems like every app you download now comes with offers of half a dozen other apps that they insist you need to install too, and half of them are anti-virus apps that don't play nice with each other, or my Avast - and insist I uninstall Avast for them. :P (Lick)

Yes and when you try to end task some of those things they pop back on. Annoying. Like a virus in itself.

I don't understand why Adobe has to update itself every other week. I think they run a check on the computer system to make sure you're not running any pirate programs of their wares.

itunes seem to be doing that also, every time I turn around there is an update.

Yeah, that stuff is frustrating to no end. I mean it makes sense that the most popular software has to keep it's protections up to date, so frequent updates make some sense, but I really hate all the addon software that they all insist you HAVE to install too. Especially the Apple products that don't even give you an option to NOT install their addons.

I agree. If you don't watch each screen as you pass through it, you could find yourself loading programs that you never use/need and could clog up your processes. I consider programs like that, as a form of a virus, as it insists that you load them, and try to sneak them onto your system. I should have to pick one method, and each update updates only what I have downloaded in the past. Then at the end, run an advert saying you might want want to try this and this and if I select yes, then they download. But to have them pre-clicked I think is bad. There is one that constantly does that with a McAfee virus checker, and I find McAfee really messes around with my files, drags my computer down to a crawl. Start up takes twice as long as it should. If I don't pay attention I will end up downloading it and it takes a little bit to uninstall it. I really think that virus' hitting the net are made by these companies. I mean if the virus wasn't out there, there would be no need for the checker. So business is slow, suddenly a nasty bug is on the loose and the checker programs are saying now is the time up upgrade as they suddenly have a fix for it almost immediately, seems fishy.

Yeah I agree totally. It's really frustrating that every time I update something like my Avast I have to CAREFULLY read through every frigging screen to make sure they aren't deciding to download something I don't need or want. I especially love it when they insist I need something that then tells me I must uninstall something else that I DO REALLY want to keep, so that the program I never wanted in the first place can run properly.
