Interesting.

Is this just an animal experiment to improve minimally invasive surgical techniques for humans? What was the goal of the experiment here? What were you looking to learn? What would have happened if the experiment succeeded vs. failed? What purpose did the metal rods have (I see you may have cameras mounted on some or one of them)?

I am friends with a biochemist so I find this sort of thing interesting. I don't approve but it does improve treatment procedures for humans.

Well, the "rods" are instruments, scissors, grasping forceps and one of them is a videocamera.
The training was a success, and the techniques we learned will improve surgical techniques for all in the future

Sorry. its just my job.. you knew that.
i'm gonna be a lot more involved in this kind of thing from now on too. we're doing a lot of research into minimally invasive techniques

obviously... but why? was the pig alive did it go to be a big happy gammon steak?

the anaesthetics don't give the pig a nice flavour, so it just gets an overdose at the end of the operation and incinerated.
There aren't enough willing human volunteers for experimental surgery yet, so we have to rely on animals. Breakthrough in surgery is usually tested on animals first. the risks are too great to try things out on humans...
