Ok, I gotta ask...how are u getting that soft, blurred background? I mainly use my cell phone for photography but I'm trying to learn how to use the manual settings on my Canon camera. Is it the aperture that you are adjusting to achieve that look?

Yes and no. With macro the closer you get the narrower that DOF gets. Even at tiny apertures like F16, the DOF with a 100mm macro lens this close is only going to be 1/8" or so. DOF is certainly a compositional element I consider when I have some control over it. Your cell phone can get close but it is a very wide angle lens with a fixed aperture. It is that wide angle that makes it impossible to get this kind of shot with a cell phone. The wider the angle of the lens, the longer the DOF will be. I hope that makes sense.
