Description
The demon scowled at the interloping humans standing in the middle of the parade square.
“I am Gerflinak the Violator.” The demon boomed. “I am a member of the Elite Guard of the Demon King and I am your doom.”
“Well, this is going to hurt.” Knight muttered under his breath.
Gerflinak looked at the piles of dead orcs on the ground.
“I expected these orc foot soldiers would be enough to snuff out this human infestation and I would not have to demean myself by getting involved.” Gerflinak sighed. “Pathetic. A force of orcs unable to dispose of some gutter human trash, insulting. That makes them unworthy to fight for my master the Demon King, so I guess it is good that they are all rotting in the dirt.”
Everyone readied themselves for a fight they had no doubt was coming. Fighting demons was a rare thing and even rarer was the humans coming out of the fight alive.
Gerflinak made a disgusted sound. “Just the thought of fighting vermin like you disgusts me. You are bugs, worthy only of being stepped on. I find it offensive that I must interact with scum like you. I feel soiled just speaking to you maggots.”
Knight only scowled at Gerflinak with a look that could burn through lead.
Gerflinak’s three lesser demon henchmen started snickering amongst themselves.
“Its just like you said.” The first lesser demon said to the second. “Human worms have no stomach for battle. They are nothing but rodents to be exterminated.”
“Stepping on these worms will be no challenge for us.” The second lesser demon added.
The first lesser demon slowly walked up to Knight.
Lady Claire swallowed as the lesser demon walked towards Knight. She heard plenty of stories of lesser demons like this one slaying foot soldiers by the score without effort.
She looked around at her company, and she saw the concern on their faces. They wanted to escape. They didn’t want to face these demons. Every one of them heard stories about foot soldiers getting slaughtered by demons in humanity’s most catastrophic defeats.
“Look at this worm.” The first lesser demon snorted, every syllable thick with contempt. “He looks like a trapped rat.”
Knight stayed silent, his gaze pointed directly at the first lesser demon.
The first lesser demon loomed over Knight. He glanced back at the other demons.
“See, he is paralyzed in fear.” The first lesser demon said. “At least he is smart enough to know I could crush him like a bug. But not smart enough to run away like a frightened rabbit.”
Knight just kept on glaring at the first lesser demon in silence.
Lady Claire started to get very worried. How was Knight going to get out of this, she asked herself. A single lesser demon was terrifying. Three was what nightmares were made of.
“Listen mouse. You stand there like a coward. You are so afraid of me that your ugly face in frozen. Humans are nothing. Mark my words bug, when hundreds of humans lie dead at my feet, I will think of you cowering and trembling in fear and I will laugh.” The lesser demon said dismissively.
Knight wordlessly pulled out one of his Desert Eagles and fired a .50 Action Express bullet into the first lesser demon’s right eye and out the back of his head.
Lady Claire’s head snapped backward in shock and Celeste’s jaw dropped. Knight just killed a lesser demon with one shot, something like that has never happened before.
The two remaining lesser demons were blinking rapidly in confusion as the first lesser demon flopped onto the ground dead.
Knight walked forward and stepped on the first lesser demon’s corpse.
“Listen, whatever-your-name-is, I think you should rephrase that.” Knight said coldly at Gerflinak.
“You dare speak to Lord Gerflinak, worm?” The second lesser demon shouted indignantly. “Vermin like you should be on your face in submission before the great Lord Ger…”
Knight immediately gunned the second lesser demon down with his Desert Eagle.
“You are quickly running out of flunkies, bub.” Knight taunted. “Maybe you and your last underling should run away. You might live longer.”
Gerflinak went from disgusted to incandescent in rage.
“You dare defy me? Me? The great Gerflinak the Violator.” Gerflinak bellowed with spittle flying out of his mouth. “Impudent dog. I cannot comprehend your insolence. You are a slave, as all humans are. You are worthy of only being food for pack animals. Your very existence is the property of my master the Demon King. Come to me so I can execute you myself for your impertinence.”
Knight signaled to the Section.
Get ready.
Zoe started casting buffs under her breath while Celeste readied her staff. Heather started warming up and Mina started pulling out potions and elixirs and sliding them in loops on her belt. Ariel, Kara and Lyra coiled up, ready to attack.
“Listen dirtbag.” Knight said. “I came to this world to kill the Demon King and I will do so. If that involves blasting away area bosses like you, burning this entire supply base to the ground and calling it a day, I will do so. I really don’t care who you are. You are a threat and a target to be eliminated. Nothing more.”
Knight could almost see the steam coming out of Gerflinak’s ears. “You will pay for your insolence.” He howled as he charged at Knight.
The fight was on.
Celeste drove her staff into the ground, infusing the parade square with Light magic.
Gerflinak stopped his charge and snarled as the Light infused ground burned his cloven feet.
Knight pulled his other Desert Eagle and opened fire on Gerflinak, firing several shots in his centre of mass.
A visibly pained Gerflinak looked down and saw holes in his armor and black blood coming out. That human drew blood. The fight just started and the human drew blood.
Gerflinak roared in fury as he charged towards Knight.
Ariel uttered a quick prayer and imbued her shield and sword with Light magic. She then jumped in front of Knight and deflected Gerflinak’s attack. She then drove her sword into Gerflinak’s unarmored thigh.
Gerflinak howled in pain as Ariel’s Light infused sword started burning his fur.
“Melee, take out his legs.” Knight called out. “Ranged, go for the wrists and hands. Magic, you are on support.”
Zoe imbued Kara and Lyra’s weapons with a Light magic buff, and they went on the attack. Lia shot arrows at Gerflinak’s hands and wrists. Heather started belting out a hymn that invigorated everyone with righteous fury and sapped Gerflinak’s strength. Morgana casted her most powerful spells.
Gerflinak was frothing at the mouth in rage as the Section hammered him with cold determination.
“Impossible. Humans are cowards. You are supposed to be cowering in fear.” Gerflinak screamed as he wildly swung at Ariel.
Ariel dodged the attack and Gerflinak’s swing went wide, throwing him off balance.
Lyra roundhouse kicked Gerflinak in the right knee and an instant later Kara drove her sword into the same knee.
Knight fired several shots through Gerflinak’s off hand.
Lady Claire and her knights took on the third lesser demon as Knight and his Section fought Gerflinak.
With his first hit, the third lesser demon knocked three of Lady Claire’s knights aside.
Lady Claire threw everything she had at this fiend. She had her priest empower her sword with Light magic. The Section had done the same and were making maximum use of it.
“Parasites.” The lesser demon shouted. “Vermin. Rodents.”
Lady Claire saw her knights’ attack bounce off the lesser demon’s armor.
“Switch to maces.” Lady Claire called out. If they can’t penetrate the lesser demon’s armor, they could use blunt force damage.
At least that was the theory.
Celeste kept up healing and keeping the parade square infused with Light magic to chip away at Gerflinak’s health. Mina tossed her an elixir, and she downed it in one go. She glanced over at Lady Claire and her company.
It wasn’t good.
“John.” Celeste called out.
Knight looked over and saw Lady Claire and her knights were not doing very well against the third lesser demon. Their swords and spears glanced off the lesser demon’s armor, so they switched to maces and war hammers. The only real damage being done was the Light imbued attacks from Lady Claire.
The lesser demon’s strength was such that he was knocking foot soldiers around like ragdolls.
Knight looked back at the Section. They were holding Gerflinak at bay and slowly wearing him down. He was now limping, favoring his left knee and his off hand dangled at his side.
Time to give Lady Claire a hand, Knight thought.
Knight holstered one of his Desert Eagles as he darted over. He came up on aim and held his other Desert Eagle with both hands.
The lesser demon was looking away from him, fighting Lady Claire and her knights.
I need to get him to turn, Knight thought.
Knight took a couple of slow breaths and fired. The bullet glanced off the lesser demon’s helmet.
The lesser demon turned to see where the latest attack came from.
There.
Knight fired two quick shots into the lesser demon’s forehead.
Double Tap to the head.
The lesser demon fell face first to the ground dead.
Lady Claire and her company were taken aback, not believing the lesser demon was dead.
When she saw Knight running back to re-engage Gerflinak, Lady Claire rushed to join him.
The instant Gerflinak realized that he might lose a battle with humans, he went berserk. He swung and hacked at everything that moved. He couldn’t lose to humans. He was a demon. He was superior to humans in every way. He was a member of the Elite Guard. There was no way he could lose to humans.
But every time Gerflinak swung at one member of the Section, the others would slash at his legs. Now Lady Claire was engaged. She slashed at the back of his legs with her sword.
Lia shot another arrow at Gerflinak’s elbow, and he suddenly dropped his sword. Gerflinak angrily tried moving his fingers to no avail. Furious, he swung wildly with his claws only to miss these slippery humans.
Gerflinak roared as he legs suddenly went out and he fell to the ground.
“Impossible.” Gerflinak bellowed as he struggled to stand. “This is impossible. This cannot be. I am Gerflinak the Violator, a member of the Elite Guard of the Demon King. I can’t fall to human vermin like you.”
Knight coldly walked over to Gerflinak. He holstered his Desert Eagles and pulled out his shotgun.
“It is more than possible. I just happened.” Knight said. He punctuated his statement by racking the action.
“No.” Gerflinak snapped. “Impossible. You are humans. You are vermin. You cannot defeat a superior creature like me. It doesn’t happen. It can’t happen.”
“Listen dirtbag, let the second last thing that goes through your mind is the simple fact that your Demon King will fall.” Knight said sternly.
“Second last?” Gerflinak asked scornfully. “Don’t you mean it’s the last thing to go through my mind?”
“No, this is.” Knight said. He stuffed the shotgun barrel into Gerflinak’s mouth and pulled the trigger.
Gerflinak slumped to the ground dead.
Everyone stood there in silence as they absorbed the fact that they just slew a powerful demon and three lesser demons.
And the killing blow to all four demons was done by one man. A sell-sword summoned from across Creation to fight the Demon King.
Lady Claire’s company started to cheer. They had won.
Knight turned to Celeste. “Start healing the wounded. When that’s done, start rummaging through their headquarters for intelligence. The rest of you, standard operating procedure.”
The Section spread out through the camp. All but Morgana.
Knight looked over at Morgana. She looked pensive.
“What is it?” Knight asked.
Morgana was still staring at Gerflinak’s corpse as Kara and Mina started sawing off his large horns as trophies.
“He said he was part of the Elite Guard.” Morgana said. “There is only one reason for one of the Elite Guard to show up at the front. The Demon King has sent a demon prince to take command of the orc army.”
Knight placed a supportive hand on Morgana’s shoulder. “I’ll tell Lady Claire. While I’m doing that, start burning this place so the orcs can’t use it.”
Morgana nodded and walked off to accomplish her task.
Knight went over and filled Lady Claire in.
Lady Claire looked at Knight.
“We have to tell the Royal Army.” Lady Claire said.
“We will.” Knight said. “First we must burn this place to the ground.”
As soon as the supply base was in flames, they all climbed onto their horses and sped off towards the Royal Army’s camp.
