That's just MEAN!

Vision: you did an excellent job of getting the point across, and it was executed beautifully. Sweetie is my favorite of the CMC, so to Seeger betrayed like this really hits home for me.

Originality: I have honestly never seen something like this before, and it is kinda refreshing to see original things coming out of this fandom.

Technique: I had to ding you here because, for all of the impact, it is hampered a little bit by the art style. The lines just are a little too thin, and Sweetie's hind leg looks a little off. Other than that, you did a good job.

Impact: Like I said, this picture hit me like a ton of bricks. Just the thought that they would do that to her makes me want to reach in there, slap away Sweetie's diary, and give them a very stern talking to. And then give Sweetie a hug.

Overall: Woo!

Vision: Oh, this is horrible. Also, sadly a common-place occurence. I can get behind the idea that neither of these imbeciles would understand what personal space is or why Sweetie Belle is angry.

Originality: In a television series, this would lead to a moral lesson about respecting privacy that the viewer gets but that the ponies don't. Here, it could be the jumping-off point for anything.

Technique: Aside from some minor quibbles with hindlegs, this is more or less what I would expect to see if I read about the scenario.

Impact: The immediate impact is Sweetie Belle being told not to take her privacy so seriously by invasive jerks who insist on not learning lessons. The more distant impact could be anything.

Children are monsters. Annoying, selfish monsters. This could easily be a screenshot of an episode dealing with how people hurt each other, and how hard it is to get friends back after an offense.

Visually, this is a treat. The composition is simple, and elegantly leads the viewer from Sweetie Belle to the bag to the other two. The action lines on Apple Bloom and Scootaloo form a huddled A shape with the book. The backgrounds are clutter-free, and the circle on the floor symbolically isolates the two from Sweetie Belle.

The characters are well drawn, and on-model. The blush and the eye dilation on Sweetie Belle are perfect.

The book text required a click to zoom to read, but that's okay because it heightened the drama. The only things I think could use work are Sweetie's right hind leg and Scootaloo's left; the hooves on both are not quite on-model, IMO.

A stunning piece, which could easily be the cover to an MLP:FiM comic book.

You give children too little credit... and too much.

How do you define what they do? In that, there is misunderstanding. Children 'do what they feel'. As do you.

The difference between adults and children is that adults can make up reasons for why they did something... while children are still learning to do it. The only excuse I've heard both adult and child say is 'because it was funny'.

A child... funny is whatever is actually funny. They do not the lenses that more mature persons have that 'dampen' funny occurances. Surely you wouldn't laugh if an old lady slipped and broke her hip: she's badly hurt! But to a child... if the fall looked funny, it was funny. There isn't much immediate thought to if she's all right until later.

Concepts... are learned. So too are justifications. That's why a child doesn't often have much explanation for what they do - they are just doing whatever their brain wants. They do possess empathy, but only if emotions are utterly transparent. They cannot project much, nor do they particularly care. If kindness strikes their fancy, they'll do that. If stealing does, they'll do that too. It's a matter of what we reward that helps decide what they'll 'prefer' to do... though a mixed-up head can trump the best parents.

They are complicated to deal with... perhaps because of their simplicity.

That last statement is probably the wisest I've ever heard about children, and a wonderful summary of your reply, which I agree with completely.

That last statement also applies to people with autism / Asperger's to some degree, sometimes. I know, because I'm an aspie.

Even children with great parents are still capable of terrible wrongs through ignorance, spite, greed, etc. In the case of this picture, I'd assume ignorance and curiosity.

Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara's first appearance in Call of the Cutie is a good example of what I mean. I've known kids who teased others just to watch them cry, or stolen things not because of the value of the things, but because of the effect it would have on the victim.

It's more tragic when kids (or adults) do it accidentally. Read "Right The Down Staircase " to see two adult ponies resolving an accidental but deep wound. It's based on something that I did to a friend last year.

All children are monsters, sociopathic apex predators with destructive and selfish instincts. They must be trained into rationality and civility. Parenting is incalculably important in maintaining society, but the only requirement is a functioning set of nibbly bits.

I'm only a cynic when I'm feeling reflective.

Luckily (blessedly), they can also be highly empathetic. Earlier tonight, I saw the guilt and shame of a kid who accidentally broke another kid's finger. (It may just be sprained or something; I hadn't heard the final news by the time I wrote this.)

Born evil? Little devils? I didn't mean any of my comments in the theological or ideological sense (and further pursuit of that angle should be in notes if you wish). I meant children can be cruel accidentally or purposefully, as much as adults. It's a blessing that they generally don't want to be seen as bad people; self-norming mini-societies help society at large.

If this seems at odds with my prior comment, that's because I'm not feeling reflective at the moment. A friend of mine is being accidentally cruel at this very moment, and all I can do is watch and pray.
