I get a lot of questions about this whenever I use it in a video or in a wip process example, so I thought I may as well go over it in a bit more depth. It feels like something simple, and is very easy to use once you get the hang of it, but I never know how confident people are in PS so it might be helpful. Shouldn't go around making assumptions.Enjoy! And hope it helps.
I'm working in Photoshop CS3 here.
Keyboard shortcuts should translate fine, just substituting ctrl for β.

what you should do is, in each panel, show the layers instead of just mentioning them. also, show the curser too, on stuff that needs to be clicked. but other than that, great tutorial.

Yep, the only cleanup was closing up some of the gaps to make sure the magic wand would only select the outside. The last few steps in my process involve painting over the top of the lines layer though, usually, so slight irregularities are cleaned up at the end instead of the start.

the PC equiv of the command key is the ctrl key, and the option key on macs is the alt key on pc.
my school lab uses all macs, so i've had to adjust.

I realise that normally, but in PS macs use the control key as well as command... I guess it probably is ctrl the same here as well though.

I can see your point about the 'artistic crafts' bit, since it does sort of make things easier, in some ways, but I don't agree about the sterility of itβit is a bit complicated to begin with, I guess, but once you get the hang of it I don't see it as 'cheating' in any wayβif anything I'd say it's less sterile and more hand-done since it means I end up painting most of my selections instead of just using the lasso, so the only way you're going to avoid it is not using any selections at all... Which, while might have some merit to do with 'doing things by hand' sort of defeats the purpose of working digitally at all...
The magic wand is the only bit that I'd mostly agree about, but I only use it to set up a flat background to begin with, in the end I will re-paint in the white background over a piece (as I did with all the zerg images) rather than just fill-with-white.
