    Dragonwell lumbered through the forest wing of the Conservatory with Elevenses perched safely atop his back. The old trees towering above them seemed to grow endlessly upward to the glassy roof nearly beyond view. Around Dragonwell’s long slender legs Noki and Elfe scampered, but their weaving did not cause the great esk to lose balance, nor did he ever come close to stepping on either of his friends. The grace of the forest spirit was unmatched and unexpected seeing his size.
    Joining the group was an esk none of them had met before. She emerged from the trees almost rivaling Dragonwell in height. They exchanged courteous head bows, then walked together toward the upward slope of the forest floor. Cutting into this climb was the mouth of a cave which further opened up into a tunnel the deeper one might go. The rocky walls, ceiling, and floor were carpeted in moss, lichen, vines, and various other forest plants. The whole tunnel seemed to be a sanctuary.
    Dragonwell stepped into this dimly lit space and gazed at the shimmering white crystals that sprouted from amidst the plants. His incense illuminated the tunnel with a warm glow, and filled the air with the rich scents of cinnamon and chai. As this was the destination he had planned, the magnificent creature settled himself on the mossy floor. Iso, the large newcomer, laid across from him, and the two smaller esk Noki and Elfe snuggled up to her tail. Elevenses stepped off Dragonwell’s back and made a little nest between his front paws.
    In the middle of their circle a tall, spiraling pillar of yellow flames whirled from floor to ceiling. The yellow glow met Dragonwell’s warm one as it cast a very gentle heat to keep the whole party from the chilly forest air outside. Little sprouts of golden plants began pushing through the moss around Iso’s toes as she peered into the enchanted fire. Seeing as his group was all comfortable and ready, Dragonwell broke the silence with a deep, calm, accented voice. He began to tell them the tales of the men he had traveled with along the Tea Horse Road.
