If you push someone's buttons long enough, you'll learn what their weak spot is.
Cale tried to not directly hurt Denny. He tried to be a jerk, he tried to make it as visible as possible that he's undoubtedly a person who was destined to be abandoned, who was too rotten, too broken to be fixed. He was hurting himself by feeding his anxieties, traumas and guilty complexes and hoped that Denny would make the right decision and leave him before they would both drown.
... Which is also why Cale didn't leave Denny - in his past, Denny was always the one who was dumped or left behind. Cale knows this, and because dumping Denny would be to directly take an advantage of his weakness, Cale just couldn't do it. But Denny tolerated all his bullshit and was obviously hurting, but he was resilient and optimistic and wanted to be there for Cale.
This is when we return to prompt 3... So Cale refused to help with Penny's vet bills. Denny of course tried to manage on his own with his minimum wage, but Cale had finally found something that triggered a completely new emotional reaction in Denny. Anger, disbelief, disappointment, betrayal.
It made Cale feel sicker than ever before, and he chickened out. He dumped Denny without explanation and cut all contact with him for five years.
OKAY I'm a day late, but the ~experimentally artistic interpretation of the relationship between Cale and Denny~ is done.

Tbh... I had a different vision for this saga. This "found" piece was supposed to be like something positive, but I have done that already. Instead of wholesome I thought it would make more sense to focus on the relationship times and how it ended.
It was pretty fun to work on this drawing, but writing this description made me sad. ú^ù why am I doing this to myself......
