High Strangeness 2025: The Ropen — Description

Still unwell so this is another simple one, ah well it was fun to draw. Pterosaurs have such weird anatomy.

The Ropen
In the skies of Papua New Guinea is said to fly a large, bat-like creature that emits a powerful glow. The locals are said to call this creature the Ropen, and say that it it nocturnal and steals bodies from graves to devour.
It's appearance is similar to a mixture of different extinct pterosaurs, and it has a long tail not seen in the larger species in the fossil record.

Aaaand that's where I end the storytelling part with the Ropen because everything else about it annoys me. Creationists love this thing and use it as an example of "living dinosaurs" (pterosaurs aren't dinosaurs but you get the idea), proving their worldview that the earth is young and that humans and dinosaurs lived together or whatever.
The reason why this part of its origin pisses me off is because I'm not even sure if this is a real piece of New Guinean folklore that dates far back, or if its something creationists have invented or greatly changed while interviewing the locals of the island, colonialism at its finest.
I have a similar frustration with other dinosaur cryptids like Mokele-mbembe which also seem to be pre-existing folklore that's been tampered with by creationists with an agenda :/
The Ropen gets a pass at least because it's a glow-in-the-dark pterosaur which is badass and fun to draw.
