Description
She didn't need a leash.
The vampire agreed.
(~1,200 words | dog POV)
"Sera is the one you'll want to impress." Alexei said it not as a joke but a cautionary tale. Sera. Sounded friendly enough. There had been a Sara at the shelter Scout had occupied before Nathan and Noah found her. Scout liked Seras.
"They'll expect her to be on leash." Alexei announced as they pulled up to the gate. This time it was said as a joke. Alexei had never seen Scout on a leash. Noah had not packed one when they left for the cabin all those months ago. Scout did not need a leash. "She doesn't need a leash," Noah said resolutely. "I know." Alexei agreed before getting out to open the gate.
Once they were securely inside the gate Alexei pulled up to the largest building on the grounds before cutting the engine. He looked at Noah and after a moment of hesitation gave Noah's leg a squeeze before getting out. A woman was approaching Alexei as Noah started to get out. Noah watched the exchange briefly before turning to the car and letting Scout out of the backseat.
Alexei and the woman were still discussing something when Scout began her analysis of the grounds. If this were to be her and Noah's new home for the time being she would ensure it was safe. The grounds were secure. More so than the cabin's had been in fact. There also was a distinct smell to the place. There were humans here, yes, but something else. Vampires. More than one. Alexei had used the word several times. Scout could confirm it. Noah had said the word back at the cabin like he was still getting used to. So was Scout. Scout returned to Noah only then realizing the energy coming off the woman who had been speaking to Alexei. Warm. Not in temperature. But welcoming. There was an air of command as well. As though this entire space was hers. Which Scout supposed was true if this was Sera as she expected. Scout fully faced the woman, evaluating. The woman returned the look, not unkindly, but not softening either. Just still.
"She likes you," Noah announced after a moment. "She's assessing the compound," the woman replied. "She does both at once," Noah informed her. "She's efficient." The woman looked at him then. She extended her hand. "Sera Castellanos." "Noah Franklin." They shook. "Thank you for having us." "Thank you for coming," Sera said, in a tone that suggested she meant every word.
Sera ushered them inside, providing greetings and a brief tour. A woman — tall and human — approached them as soon as they made it in the door. She was very eager to meet Noah, and Scout thought she would be ignored until the end of the enthusiastic greeting when the woman bent down, giving Scout her full attention. "And this is your companion, Scout, right? Having a dog here will be…fun." Scout wasn't sure she agreed. She was not an enrichment activity.
A man came up then, another human. Taller than the woman but not by much. He smelled like the woman's kin. He provided a nod of what Scout assumed was approval, but he did not speak.
Neither did the other man who appeared in the doorway shortly after they walked into the large room. This was a vampire. This was their security. This man would be a smart ally to make. He looked at Scout — a question forming that Noah already had an answer to.
"She won't bark unless there's a reason."
"How specific are her reasons?" the vampire asked.
"Very," Noah said. "She has different signals for different threat types. You'll learn them."
The vampire considered this. Then he nodded, once, with the air of someone accepting a new piece of operational infrastructure. "Good." He assessed the room briefly before exiting — Scout assumed to continue his work securing the area. She liked him already.
There was another Scout had not noticed at first. A boy. He was sitting on a couch, looking over the back of it, turned to face them, but said nothing. He did not appear to want to be there but did not seem to want to move either. His eyes were sad and watching.
Sera continued their tour down a hallway. "My office is at the end of the hall. That door there is to the comms room — how we found you. This is Dr. Reeves' lab slash medical area. You'll definitely be spending some time in there. And this is our other scientist, Lena's lab."
Sera's face changed then. Brief. Telling. The person who had changed it appeared in the open doorway but did not come into the hall. The look that passed across Lena's face was soft and gentle and also very brief. It turned quickly to something more reserved. More dismissive.
"We're happy to have you, Noah. I'm excited to get to work." She looked down at Scout then. "I hope you and your companion feel at home here." She did not offer anything else. She looked at Sera with that same expression before turning back to her lab. Her domain.
Lena, Scout realized, was Sera's Nathan.
"And this is the way to the barracks. Noah, you will be bunking with Alexei — I assume that's alright." Sera's words were brief and made sense, but caused a shift in both Noah and Alexei that was not visible but very apparent.
"I forgot there are only six rooms. You can take the room, Noah. As you know, I don't need sleep."
"But you do sleep. And there are two beds in each room, right?"
"Yes, well—"
"And what if you need to sleep or rest?"
"Yes, well, I could—"
"And your things are already in there."
"My things can be moved."
"To where?"
"I could clear out a space in the garage. Or the storage shed."
"Lex. You're not sleeping in a shed when there is a perfectly good bed in a perfectly good room."
It was Sera's turn to pause. The name Noah used for Alexei had not landed right with her, but she said nothing. Instead she stepped ahead of them and opened the door to the room. "Two beds, as promised. I'm sure this won't be a problem?" She directed it at Alexei, who gave a quick nod. "Good." She turned to Noah then. "I trust you'll be able to get settled in alright. I made our eager scientist promise to give you at least the day before they begin their poking and prodding, but as I'm sure you can appreciate, they are eager to get started. Let me know if you need anything, and again — thank you so much for coming." She exited, then turned back once. "Let me know if anything needs to be added to the manifest for the next pickup for your roomie, Lex." The last word was drawn out, not matching the tone of her regular cadence, and it did something to Alexei's posture.
As soon as Sera had left, Scout inspected the entire room before deciding on a bed. "Sorry, I can move her to mine," Noah said instantly. Scout looked up. Alexei did not seem to mind. "She is fine there. This is her room too."
They were unpacking when a knock sounded at the door. All three of them looked up.
"Uncle Lexei, can I talk to you for a second?"
