Planet Venus, even though named after the goddess of love and beauty, in fact, possesses little of the characteristics that ancient astronomers attributed to her. With the pressure that would crush you instantly, temperatures of over 400 degrees Celcius, a toxic atmosphere which also contains large clouds of sulphuric acid, as well as acid rains that could melt your flesh, it isn't highly recommended destination for holidays.ΒRelated content

Quite unlike the Venus of Olaf Stapledon's LAST & FIRST MEN, or the one in BEYOND MARS, a scifi comic in the Daily News long ago. It was never visited and one of its people was a regular main character, BUT no others were ever shown.

In re: Venus's hellish environoment.
IN one of my last fan-fics, I describe a spell MERGENCY that is the first step in terraforming a planet. It requires at least 100 wizards to cast it, and 10% will die ! So it is best that the casters all be finished with life, having "seen it all". Prolonging life is fine in theory, BUT there comes a limit.
MERGENCY was devised & indicted to parchment by the wizard Merryweather (not the original spelling of his name.). Knowing the requirements of the spell, he forebore trying it out -and did die with others , in using it finally.

What does the spell exactly do?

The ~82 spells I delineate in my fan-fics, I do not give the exact wording, as I do NOT want to cause mischief, if somebody with "personal force" fiddles with them.
Mergency requires, as I said, at least 100 wizards, their minds all stepping as one, Mayhaps, MAYHAPS, a super-sorceror supreme could manage said spell all by him(or her)self, but only a literal handful of such have ever existed in the past 12,000 years, and at the time none are left.
The wizards would assemble at a pole and,in a sense, fire the spell through the planet's core to the other pole.As the syllables of the spell are intoned with "words" like "hefonim","uiiu", "thbl'lk" and so on, 5% of the casters would be hurled to the sky,their lifeforce used to detonate & ignite the radiation belt that the planet would need, the jumpstarted belts would be briefly visible. Another 5% would plunge to the core of the planet, their lifeforce to ignite the furnace core. Lightning, auroras, earthquakes ...
Thus the stage is set for the GENESIS WAVE spell, but so far I've no info on what risks it poses for the wizards. The earth WAS bereft of the Van Allen belts and the core furnace's energy in the events of "DARK LEGACY OF THE SHINING TETRAHEDRON", and Merryweather, having been alive for over 1000 years (he even watched the battle of Hastings from afar,standing on a tor), finally tested the spell. He and others perished, but they were all ready. The earth was thus saved from the consequences of its energy being stolen.
In the future, the moon,Mars, and even Venus would be terraformed. No word on how many wizards would be expended in all this.
At Domdaniel school, the wordsΒ "MAGIC DERIVES FROM PERSONAL FORCE" are inscribed in the entrance hall. I rest now: this took much from me. Mayhaps I go make dinner.

I'm superficially reminded of Lilith from Mazeway by Jack Williamson. A serpentine alien adapted to unearthly conditions lethal to humans without considerable protective gear who had a spiny back and a triradially symmetrical mandible/pincer hand mounted on the tip of a prehensile tongue as her manipulator appendage.
Also, can you imagine the worldwide reaction if the Venera's first image from the surface of Venus had been a single shot of this looking at the probe, then the mandible rapidly extending towards the camera followed by a permanent cessation of transmission ?

Yeah. Still, I read there are already plans to colonize it using floating zeppelin-like buildings high in the atmosphere where conditions are better.

Funny thing, some people believed Venus was a swamp due to the clouds (then the planet should be wet), and if there were swamps, there were ferns, and big insects, and DINOSAURS...Β
You can't see a thing because there are clouds covering the whole planet. Conclusion: dinosaurs!
Fortunately, real science proved Venus was a desert-like oven, a planet that looks very much like Hell itself.Β
