So I guess this goes into how Skyler and Cloud met.
Skyler was driven from his herd for being vegetarian, and was attacked for this "sin".

Now, the reason those scratches are pink and there is no blood is because the scales were torn away, revealing raw flesh; quite painful, if you ask me.
