Kiani — Description
When I started this i was originally going to do a bookend pinup similar to my aspen piece - a bust shot of Kiani in a circular border graphic - but as i headed down that road the composition worked less and less for me and the idea of doing a tribute to michael turner getting greater and greater. So i scraped that first plan and began thinking about something fast and easy that i could do. The Aspen Moonlight piece that mike and Peter Steigerwald did ---> [link] seemed like a good choice.

Since i wanted to keep it simple i was going to do a straight copy of the image and pose replacing Aspen with Kiani, but after about two minutes I decided that 1. i was better than that and 2. Mike would have expected more from me then that(yes i hear voices in my head and I listen to them!) So i set about taking the scene and idea and creating a whole new image.

Kiani has always been a turbulent character in the stories. Whereas in Mike's piece, Aspen is sitting in the fairly calm ocean, water lapping at her feet, I went with a more aggressive environment, the waves literally crashing over and against Kiani. I also carried over the design of Aspens bikini bottom plus put my little spin on it and yes drawing Kiani's hair was the most time consuming part. I'm not entirely sure all the ends connect properly to the bits coming off her head lol .

Overall I think i did the idea justice and it's a nice personal commission piece ready to be hung on my wall.

colorist notes this is a night time scene. like the original i left the sky portion open to add in clouds, moon etc. Alternately you could do an evening scene with the sun setting on the horizon. If you are not familiar with the character, she is Kiani from Aspen Comics and has been in the Fathom series as well as her own mini's. plenty of reference is available.
