In short, the “Hunter Beta” was a project undertaken by Umbrella's European headquarters, using hybrid sequences from the “Hunter Alpha” bioweapon. New scientists assigned to the project sought to modify the “α” prototype with the intention of enhancing its tracking capabilities.

Initial results were promising, improving the “Hunter Beta’s” nervous system and reducing its reaction time to armed enemies. Among its most notable features was its stronger and more agile left arm, capable of decapitating victims with a single swipe. Unfortunately, the “Hunter Beta” project suffered instability with the development of multiple tumors that invaded its head and back, obstructing its vision and degrading its initial strengths. Mass production was canceled, and the remaining prototypes were sent to containment.

In September 1998, with the Raccoon City incident unleashed by the panic of zombies and mutants devouring the city, Umbrella investors saw a viable opportunity to conduct covert monitoring of the performance of their managed bio-weapons. Without wasting any time, an Umbrella truck transported 20 containers of Hunters Beta, which were released throughout the disaster-stricken city. This was the last known location of Hunter Beta before the bombing of Raccoon General Hospital. Beneath the hospital facilities lay a secret laboratory where an antidote to the T-Virus (zombie virus) could be obtained.
