A brass machine-gun round mounted on a dark wooden plaque in a display case at Eden Camp, the modern history museum near Malton, North Yorkshire. The brass plate beneath it is engraved “2 Para, Wireless Ridge, 14th June 1982”. The case is lined with deep crimson velvet and framed in varnished timber. A printed label headed “D Company, 2nd Parachute Regiment, Wireless Ridge 1982” explains that the round was taken from a jammed Argentinian heavy machine gun. D Company had been pinned down by the gun while trying to take the ridge during the Falklands War. After overrunning the position, the soldiers found the badly injured gunner slumped over the weapon among his fallen colleagues. A private cleared the jam and kept the round as a memento. The label adds that the company later tried to put the Argentinian forward for a military award. Photographed at an angle in the dim light of the exhibition.
