Description
Captured at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North in County Durham, this photograph shows a heavily weathered piece of riveted ironwork on wheels, standing on gravel outside the waggon works. Its tall pipe, tray-like hopper, bent copper-coloured pipework and rows of rivets all show the hard, practical engineering of a working machine. Rust, flaking black paint and patches of green moss cover the panels, and a maker's plate, only partly legible, sits on the upper body.
Wild plants push up through the gravel around the iron wheels, and thistles and ferns soften the industrial lines. Behind the machine, a red-brick wall carries a black and cream sign for the waggon works and engineers, and tall timber doors with black iron hinges rise above a railing.
Every stain, scale and rivet tells a story, and the scene is a study in texture, colour and the slow reclaiming of iron by nature.
