Description
A detailed, striking capture of an educational natural history display featuring authentic hornets' and paper wasps' nests hanging from preserved tree branches, a quintessential piece of entomological curation and biological education. Documented at the Atlas Science Center (formerly the Paper Discovery Center) in Appleton, Wisconsin, this wall-mounted exhibition serves as a brilliant reminder of the era when regional science repositories established their presence in ecological education through iconic, craft-driven natural history displays.
The exhibit's bold spherical nest architecture, glowing neutral grey tones, and the informational placard explaining the organic process of masticating wood fibers into cellulose pulp exemplify the design language of traditional interactive museum curation, created to bridge the gap between industrial manufacturing and natural biological processes. Representing the intersection of early insect behavior studies and biomimicry education utility, this installation is a classic artefact of Fox Valley cultural programming, preserving the visual culture of a time when the regional discovery center was a vital community hub.

The part that the AI description is leaving out is how terrifying these nests are in the wild - especially when you have to remove one and it's a literal hive of stinging wasp activity.

I had one in the celing of a bathroom once. They came out of the light fitting and chased me out of the bath.
Another time, I was living in an old Victorian building with sash windows. I had the light on studying at 3 am and suddenly around 50 wasps entered the room through the top of the window - it was at this point that I learned it's not only moths that are attracted to the light.
