Captured at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North in County Durham, this photograph shows a vintage open-top double-decker bus in bright blue and cream, numbered 3 on its front. Its destination board lists a circular route around the museum, taking in Pit Village, Home Farm, Entrance, Pockerley and Town. Bold advertisements for Sunlight Soap and Virol decorate the side of the upper deck, where passengers enjoy the view from the open top.
The scene around the bus is full of everyday life. Visitors sit on benches and along the wall with their lunches, families push prams and walk hand in hand with small children, and a pale dog waits patiently beside a green gate. Behind the bus, a green wooden living van and a steam-powered vehicle add to the period flavour. A traditional "Bus Stop" sign, a tall telegraph pole with a lamp and a red brick wall complete the picture.
