Hall's Distemper — Description

Captured at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North in County Durham, this photograph shows a quirky vintage advertising hoarding standing on a wooded embankment beside the railway line. Two painted cut-out figures in flat caps and long coats carry a cream board between them, its bold red lettering reading "Hall's Distemper". Each man holds a paint bucket, one with blue paint and one with yellow, and carries a brush, while a small crest sits at each end of the board.
The sign is set among tangled hedgerows and bare trees just coming into their first spring leaf, with russet foliage still clinging to the shrubs on the right. In the foreground, a rusty length of railway track and dry grasses run along the bottom of the frame, giving a sense that the sign was designed to catch the eye of passing rail travellers.
A charming reminder of the days when advertising lined the railways, and of the handcrafted signage that once brightened the countryside.
