Description
Captured at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North in County Durham, this photograph shows a beautifully restored William Foster & Co Ltd of Lincoln traction engine, loaded on a low-loader alongside its matching wagon. The engine's deep maroon paintwork, gleaming brass hub cap, black chimney with a copper rim and elegant canopy make a striking sight against the spring woodland. The wagon carries the same Lincoln maker's lettering in cream capitals and has been fitted with a railed upper deck and seating for passengers.
Two men stand beside the engine, checking and preparing it for its day's work, a glimpse of the care and teamwork behind every steam-powered outing. Pallets of reclaimed bricks and the gravel of the working yard add to the sense of an occasion in the making.
A celebration of Lincolnshire engineering, steam preservation and the enthusiasts who keep these machines alive.
