10. A Question Of Identity: In order to finally prove his intellectual superiority over the Batman, The Riddler uses a facial generator in order to finally figure out who the Batman truly is.9. City Walls: Here’s something you probably didn’t expect, a Green Arrow story. In the story, Riddler has grown bored of Gotham City, and decided to pull off a grandiose crime in Green Arrow’s city, Star City. Working for a gangster, Riddler is hired to steal an atomic bomb and holds the city hostage, demanding a ransom. However, Riddler may not be the real villain here, as something supernatural is brewing underneath Star City.
8. Dark Knight, Dark City: The Riddler is back, and on another riddle-themed crime spree. Same old Riddler, right? Well no. This crime spree is far more reckless and murderous. Riddler himself has also changed, and has become much more murderous and sadistic. Even his goons agree that he has gone crazier than the Joker. So what’s going on with Riddler, a mid-life crisis? Well no. It’s actually a lot more supernatural than that, and no I won’t spoil it.
7. E. Nygma, Consulting Detective: After Bruce Wayne is framed for murder, the GCPD calls upon it’s newest detective - The Riddler. Wait what, the Riddler doing good? Well it’s true. Having reformed in Arkham, Riddler has decided to become a private detective, using his super genius to solve mysteries. It’s always so interesting to see a villain fight on the side of good. This story actually started a new MO for Riddler, as after this story, he began to show up in other comics, solving mysteries and teaming up with other characters.
6. The Riddless Robberies Of The Riddler: After realizing that the riddle gimmick is what has been hindering his success, Riddler tries to stop dropping riddles at his crime scenes, but he just can’t do it. His mind won’t let him take it, without dropping a riddle clue. After taking a self-help class, Riddler becomes a successful criminal again, not leaving behind any clues at his crimes. Or is he? As Batman and Robin are trying to solve this crime spree, they come across random and strange things in Gotham that could be very subtle clues.
5. Solitaire: Having escaped Arkham Asylum, The Riddler steps out into Gotham City and breaks into Wayne Tower. The Riddler is often seen as a less-threatening villain who always is bested by Batman. This story shows the mainstream how threatening The Riddler can be, as he successfully infiltrates Wayne Tower, blows up walls, incapacitates guards, and accomplishes his goal whilst barely breaking a sweat or losing his cool in the process.
4. Riddled: In this three part arc, Riddler kidnaps the C-list loser villain Cluemaster, as Cluemaster leaves CLUES at his crime scenes. It totally doesn’t sound like Riddler’s gimmick, right? He then straps a bomb vest to Cluemaster and drops him in a random area of Gotham. If Batman and Robin can’t find Cluemaster in time by solving a series of riddles, the bomb will go off, taking Cluemaster and whatever block he is standing on with him.
3. Zero Year: A year long arc that retells Batman’s origin for the modern age. It shows Batman starting off his crime fighting career by fighting the Red Hood Gang, Dr Death, and of course, The Riddler. Riddler is in the end the main villain of this massive arc, which is in fact very fortunate for the character. Before this arc, Riddler was sometimes seen as almost a B-list loser villain. Thank God this story showed that Riddler is in fact a massive threat and definitely deserves his spot amongst the greatest villains in fiction.
2. A New Dawn: A new serial killer is running loose in Gotham City, murdering museum executives while spouting Egyptian themed riddles. Riddles, is it the Riddler? Well no. It’s actually a deranged villain calling himself King Tut. Riddler is in fact insulted that someone is stealing his gimmick, and desperately wants to capture this lunatic. This leads to one of the most bizarre team ups in comic books: Batman and the Riddler.
1. Questions Multiply The Mystery: By far the Riddler’s greatest origin story. In it, Riddler tells his origins to his doctor at Arkham, and he reveals why he became the Prince of Puzzles. Surprisingly, it’s a rather mundane story. There was no singular turning point or tragic event in his life that sent him on his villainous path. He was just a nobody who got fed up with not being noticed. An overlooked kid screaming for attention. A completely unremarkable man who wanted to prove he was remarkable. Prove that he was smart. A genius in fact. That’s really it, and it’s so perfect.
