Routine task — Description

Their assignment seemed routine. Some VIP protection. They had done this many times before, so they were as relaxed as ever when they were doing a well-planned job. However, their idyll came to an end after a meeting in which the person they were supposed to protect made his own demands on how they were to do their job. First, only handguns and concealed under clothing so that no bulges would be visible. Second, no bulletproof vests, which he felt were too visible. Third, there would be only two guards on the floor, Kate and Steve, whom he had personally selected from a list of agents he had been given. He had chosen Kate and Steve because he thought the pair would be less visible to casual observers. And so almost the entire day of their duty passed. The person they were guarding had no more scheduled meetings, so Kate and Steve took off their jackets because the air in the hallway was starting to get stuffy. That was odd, Kate thought, because whenever she protected someone in a building, she asked the maintenance person for information about the installed systems and their current performance. In this case, the maintenance man swore that all the systems were in working order, having recently undergone a comprehensive inspection. Kate shared her observations with Steve, and they agreed that they should inform their commander, who was on the ground floor of the building with the other guards. However, their report was met with no response from downstairs. There was only a crackling in the headphones. Something was wrong, very wrong. Kate felt a tingling sensation down her spine and knew something bad was about to happen. She and Steve secured the door to the VIP room and headed for the stairwell. They didn’t get far before a maid with a laundry cart came around the corner and calmly approached them as if nothing had happened. Stop, Steve shouted as Kate reached for the hidden alarm button and followed him. Steve's screams made Kate realize they were in crisis, alone and without backup. Kate reflexively pressed the alarm button attached to her wrist while reaching for her pistol with her other hand. She aimed it at the suspicious maid, who was holding a silenced pistol that had already clicked twice, hitting her partner in the lower abdomen. Kate felt a dull pain in her stomach before she pulled the trigger. Before she lost consciousness, she heard a loud alarm and the assailant curse loudly and ran away. Mission accomplished, Kate thought as she fell into darkness. The backup unit, which arrived three minutes after the alarm, confirmed Agent Steve's death. Agent Kate was injured and unconscious, but her condition was stable, as confirmed by the support team medic.
