Art:
From the moment mounts were a possibility for a MG contest, I knew I wanted to do a lizard. After reviewing some photos of lizards I picked one for the body position and another for the head.
While sketching, I decided I wanted to spear to kind of come at the viewer. I threw a shadow below it, and instantly, i knew io wanted it just like that. I then started the head and details. I didn't like it at first, but as I fleshed it out and kept adding shading and details, I've come to really like it. I also wanted to make it a group or tribe, so I added some other riders to the background.
This one was an extra special kind of hell b/c I decided, for some crazy reason, to shade it. I never shade. Most of the shading I did intuitively. Only the big parts of the three legs were shaded from a photo, and even those bits I modified. I'm actually quite pleased with my shading. However, it took forever to get a scan that I deemed close enough to reality. My actual piece is much darker all around.
Story:
Rath is the English name for a tribe far to the east across a great expanse of sea. If it is to be believed, their guard ride these agile, horned lizards on patrol. Remnants of termite mounds and ancient rock columns form a nice outlook for the Lizard Riders to survey their territories.
