Okay so I know no one voted for this double headcanon, but I had some extra time in between working on my Christmas project and I've been desperately wanting to draw these guys!Edit: Here are the notes!
Bulk Biceps
When Bulk’s parents, Barbell and Drop Tank, had their first child, the last thing they expected was an undersized foal who feared everything under the sun. Barbell was aggressive and confident, and was a coach for minor league hoofball. Bulk’s mother, Drop Tank, was a firefighter who had no problem jumping into burning buildings or run headfirst into danger, and Bulk couldn’t help but be starstruck by her.
While Bulk desperately wanted to be brave like his mom, he couldn’t help but be terrified of the world around him. Bugs? Horrifying. Rain or thunderstorms? He could get sick, and the noise was terrible! Balloons? What if they pop and make a loud sound?! Everything seemed to scare Bulk. While he was an active and playful kid, he tended to miss out on things that he could enjoy because of his fear.
Not approving of the fact that his son was a “wimp”, Barbell started to put Bulk to work. He would bring his kid to work, showing Bulk the aggression and power it took for his team to be the best they could. Barbell made it clear to his son how much being physically strong would make him no longer afraid, and started to put Bulk through physical training until he was old enough to start doing a weight-lifting regimen.
Turns out that weight-lifting didn’t seem to be too terrible for Bulk. In fact, that’s how he received his cutie mark. With the events leading up to him getting his mark so fast-paced, Bulk Biceps didn’t immediately realize what his cutie mark was symbolizing. While it was true that Bulk was skilled in proper exercise and physical training, he is also rather talented at instructing others like his father before him.
Bulk did grow up physically strong. He went through a few growth spurts, towering over everyone else around him as his body filled out from his weight-training. Even though he looked intimidating and confident, Bulk Biceps felt emotionally and mentally weak. He didn’t feel free to let his parents, especially his father, how he was still just a scared kid inside regardless of how he looked. While he wasn’t scared of his mother, he wanted her to keep being proud of him and think he was growing up to be just like her.
Just as Bulk was about to finish school, his mother was sent to the ER for excessive burns to her face, back, and left wing. She had made a hasty decision during work and was in a burning building when a beam collapsed, dropping a good portion of the burning ceiling onto her body. Her wounds needed multiple skin grafts and she would be covered in large scars for the rest of her life. Bulk cried for his mother when he was alone, and spent every waking minute with her even after she was released from the hospital. For the first time, Bulk grew angry with the world around him. How could anyone let this happen? How could someone as amazing as his mom have to have something so tragic kill her career and most of her social life? His anger turned into aggression, which led him to suffer from mood swings that seemed to control his life.
In order to help out his mother with her many medical bills and debt, Bulk Biceps has multiple jobs in Ponyville, including working as a salespony for a roasted nuts cart, a masseuse at the spa, and is a weight-lifting coach for foals in his spare time. He even picks up odd jobs and temporary work, traveling outside the Ponyville area to make ends meet for both him and his parents.
Bulk Biceps, while he is a large, muscular stallion, has wings that are far too undersized for his body. His doctors believe that he suffered from a complication growing up, where his wings finished growing shortly before he started to have his growth spurts. His wings are just larger than that of an average foal and he was picked on regularly for it...until he started lifting weights. Then, the only time ponies laughed at his wings was when he was nowhere in sight.
Limestone Pie
Being the middle child in a family of six, it wasn’t odd for Limestone to occasionally be looked over. She didn’t seem to mind too much, instead focusing on all the work that needed to be done around the rock farm. With Cloudy Quartz and the twins unable to put in much work (if any at all) while they recovered from labor, Igneous depended on his two eldest to help him complete the daily chores. Maud was a natural, while Limestone struggled to keep up. She put in extra work, wanting to see the approving look in her father’s eyes. But Limestone never got to see it.
Limestone didn’t seem to get her cutie mark anywhere near as fast as her siblings. In fact, she was a blank flank until she was old enough to spend a year away from the farm on her own. In their family, each child had the option of spending some time away and explore the fast-paced world outside their farm. Maud declined, finding no interest in wandering outside the home when there were plenty of amazing rocks right where she was. It was Limestone who decided all she wanted to do was go see other parts of Equestria. So she left, promising to return in a year.
Her time outside of the farm ignited a spark in Limestone that she didn’t know she had. She relished in the busy streets and the nightlife of the cities. Lime made friends, visited museums and parks, and started to become her own pony. And even though she knew her life was dedicated to her family’s way of life, it didn’t come as such a terrible surprise when Limestone received her cutie mark outside of the rock farm.
It wasn’t too uncommon for Limestone to join her newfound friends for a few drinks at one place or another and move to one of their houses once the bars closed. It was then when Lime tried drink-making with one of her mare friends, who was too intoxicated to make the drinks herself. After some instruction, it seemed that Lime had a knack for such a skill. And once she saw the mark on her flank, she knew her father would be furious.
Limestone did as she promised, and returned to the rock farm a year after she had left. She had changed quite a bit, having grown a few more inches and sporting a new mane-style, now short and spiked in the back while still long in the front. And of course, her cutie mark was clear as day for her family to see. Igneous nearly had a heart attack when he saw his daughter again, spouting off how she had defiled herself by changing her looks and how her cutie mark meant nothing but trouble, only pushing her into a dangerous world.
Being reminded constantly in passive-aggressive glances and words of her father’s constant disapproval, Limestone developed an anxiety disorder. She knew she would never be able to return to a life outside the rock farm without being disowned completely from the family and doubted anything she could do would be enough to convince her father otherwise. She pushed herself harder into her chores at the farm, regularly picking up her younger sisters’ slack when they were goofing off or sick. Lime’s anxiety came in multiple forms, some being bouts of irritation or anger and lack of patience, insomnia, constant worrying, and headaches. After a while, it seemed like who Limestone had been was gone and the only things left to show were her anxiety symptoms shining through.
And here’s a little sneak peek into their relationship:
To celebrate her eldest sister moving into town, Pinkie decided to throw a “rockswarming” party (ie a housewarming party) for everyone to see Maud’s new place under Ponyville. Among those invited were Pinkie and Maud’s friends, and some of the strongest ponies Pinkie knew in Ponyville. The group was small, but seemed to be just perfect for someone like the eldest Pie sister. The Mane 6 and Spike was sure to come, along with Limestone, Marble, Starlight Glimmer, Sunburst, and Bulk Biceps. Bulk, unlike the others who had some kind of tie to Maud in one way or another, had been friends with Pinkie Pie for the past few years and she told the others how amazingly strong he was and how he would fit right in at the party. She had seen him work himself into exhaustion and Pinkie wanted to see him have fun and relax.
Since Pinkie had organized the party, she planned on the small group doing a type of scavenger hunt. The group would split up into small teams of 2 and they would dig in a different direction, having a set amount of time to find as many rocks and gemstones as they could. The groups went as follows: Applejack and Rarity, Pinkie and Marble, Starlight and Sunburst, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, Twilight and Spike, and Limestone and Bulk Biceps. Not only would the groups be finding treasures back for Maud to judge and collect, but they would also be creating tunnels for Maud to later explore on her own.
The groups all scattered and got to work, with only Limestone and Bulk feeling rather odd as they started to dig into the cave walls. Once they started to break down the walls and recognized the other’s strength, the two seemed to relax greatly. Limestone joked about how it was unfair to put two of the strongest ponies together and how they were sure to win, while Bulk mentioned how happy he was to be making friends at the party. Time seemed to pass slowly and quickly at the same time and they talked about everything and nothing at the same time. They spoke lightly of their families, their jobs, their interests, etc. The two switched off in their roles of who dug the tunnel and who collected the rocks and gems, working together rather seamlessly.
By the time all the groups were meant to return, Limestone and Bulk Biceps had started to genuinely enjoy the new friendship between them. They hauled in a large bag filled with goodies for Maud, as did the other groups. At the end of the judging, Limestone and Bulk ended up not winning, but they knew they had fun. Pinkie Pie watched them from the corner of her eye, knowing exactly what she did when she paired them together for the scavenger hunt. Before everyone left for the night, Limestone mentioned how Bulk’s skills could be well-used at somewhere like the rock farm. Bulk didn’t think too hard about it, but appreciated what seemed like a small compliment.
The two didn’t seem to see each other too often, but Pinkie was sure to invite Bulk whenever Limestone was expected to be there. Bulk and Lime continued a casual friendship, but nothing seemed to go anywhere until misfortune struck the Pie family.
A few years after Maud had moved to Ponyville, the girls got news of their father passing away. He had always been a quick-tempered man, but it seemed like his anger became too much for him as he got older. He suffered from a heart attack and was unable to recover, quickly passing with his wife at his side. More ponies attended his funeral than was expected, including the Mane 6, the Apple family, and the Cake family. It wasn’t too much of a shock to Pinkie, but Bulk Biceps also came to support the sisters in their time of grieving. Knowing how much the Pie family would need an extra pony on the farm, especially with their mother in no condition to work, Bulk decided to volunteer himself to be a helping hoof. That way, Maud could still continue her work in Ponyville and the whole family wouldn’t have to drop everything they were doing.
Bulk Biceps proved to be an amazing worker at the rock farm, making chores much more manageable than they would have been without him. Limestone and Marble did their best to keep up with him, but he seemed to be on his own level of endurance and strength. Limestone appreciated his help and the two continued to become better friends. It seemed to take forever (at least, that’s what Pinkie would tell you) but Bulk finally mustered up the courage to ask Limestone out. Lime was worried that their friendship would be ruined if the two of them dated and later broke up, but she decided to take a chance.
Once the two started dating, Bulk seemed to open up to her like he had never opened up to another pony before. He told her about his fears, even the “ridiculous” ones, and how he really felt about his upbringing and constant pushing by his father. Limestone also started to open up, showing Bulk parts of her anxiety that no one else had known about, or how she received her cutie mark but was unable to follow it. Once Limestone was comfortable telling other ponies of their relationship, Bulk told everyone how he was dating his best friend.
