What She Stepped In — Description

Returning from an afternoon outing with friends she arrives back at her apartment. She's looking forward to a Zoom call with another friend who didn't manage to make the meeting. As she's unlocking her door she remembers the feeling of a faint lump beneath her toes that she felt before reaching the restaurant.
She enters and closes the door behind her, her high heeled sandals click-clacking on the tile floor. She looks down at her toes, the black nail polish makes them look fetching. She heads to her couch as she brings up her friend's contact and calls her.
As she sits down, her friend answers. “Hey Leyla, how'd it go” the woman asks wearily.
“Great, we missed you” Leyla replies.
“Yeah, I'm sorry that I wasn't able to come” she replies as Leyla undoes the ankle strap and slips the back strap of her sandal off from her heel.
“I hope you're feeling better” Leyla says. She slips her foot from the sandal.
“I took some pseudophedrine, my head is feeling better” she replies as Leyla bends over to pick the sandal up. A look of disgust appears on her face. “What's the matter” her friend asks.
Leyla picks her shoe up, showing the sole. “Look at this shit that I stepped in” she says, displaying the tiny smashed into the dirty tread.
“Ew, when did you step in that” the friend asks.
Leyla laughs, “I think before getting to the restaurant” she says before tossing her sandal aside carelessly. “That's when I felt a lump underfoot. It's been stuck there the entire time” she adds with a chuckle before removing her other sandal.
The two women continue chatting as the tragedy on the bottom of Leyla's sandal becomes a distant memory. After an hour the two women finish the call. Leyla gets up and looks at the upturned sandal, “I'll wear it off at the botanical garden tomorrow” she pledges before walking away.
