That is kind of more fitting if you go off the colors, Twilight's are a lot more dark and mysterious especially in the dark while Sunset's gives off a more warm feel to her

the Mane 5 five woke up and exited their rooms to see Sunset and Smolder rushing down the halls after the intruder and followed after them. Sunset chase after the stranger before Sunset teleports infront of her.
Sunset: Stop!
The pony however didn't stop and instead just teleported away with megenta magic, leaving her white cloak to cover Sunset. She reappeared behind her, she was purple unicorn with a blue, purple and pink striped straight mane and tail and a six-point star cutie mark. She then ran off again as Sunset managed to get the cloak off her and followed after the thief
The unicorn ran but saw the Mane 6 and Smolder was still on her tail and ran faster down the hall. Sunset tried to grab the saddle bag holding her crown with her teeth but missed. The stranger turned around just in time to see Sunset pounce on her as they tumbled into an unknowned room of the castle and the crown fell out the stranger's saddle bag, bounced around the room before, disappearing through a mirror?!
The Mane 6 gasped in shock while the strange unicorn smirked in success. Sunset scowled at the stranger.

Twilight Teleports away from Sunset, much to her shock. Sunset turns to see Twilight standing by the mirror.
Twilight: Princess.
Twilight gives a mock salute before diving into the portal. The Mane 6 gasp.
Sour Sweet: Um, who the heck was that?

Princess Luna: Twilight Sparkle a former student of mine. She began her studies with me not long before Sunset, but when she didn't get what she wanted as quickly as she liked, she turned cruel and dishonest. I tried to help her, but she eventually decided to abandoned her studies and pursue her own path, one that has sadly lead her to stealing her crown!

Smolder: She replaced Sunset's with this one.
Smolder pulls out the crude replica of Sunset's crown while Luna examines it. They all soon file out of the throne room.
Luna: I suppose Twilight Sparkle would've hoped you wouldn't realized this isn't truly yours. And by the time you knew it would be too late to go after her and your element of harmony.
Sunset walked next to her former teacher.
Sunset: But I still don't understand. Where did she go, and where did she take my crown?
Luna: You will soon know more about this place than even I do.

Princess Celestia: This is no ordinary mirror it is a gateway to another world and gateway they only opens once every thinny moons.

Lemon Zest taps a hoof on the surface of the mirror as it rippled like water.
Lemon: Whoa! Sparkly!
Celestia rolled her eyes and moved the earth pony away from the mirror.
Celestia: It was always kept in throne room of Canterlot Castle, but after Chrysalis took over Crystal Empire we sent it here for her to look after.

Princess Luna: I had always hoped Twilight Sparkle would use it to return, to come back to Equestria seeking my guidance. Obviously this is not what have happened.

Chrysalis: Sunset, you must go through the mirror to find this other world and retrieve your crown. Without it the other Elements of Harmony will have no power and Equestria will be without its greatest means of defense.
Sunset nodded.
Celestia: Your Crown does not belong in the place Twilight Sparkle now calls home, and in her possession your Element of Harmony will know doubt bring danger to the denizens of this new world. They will not have the means to protect themselves.
Luna then strapped a pair of saddle bags onto Sunset back and the younger alicorn turned to her.
Luna: Do you understand the importance of your task?
Sunset: Of Course.
Luna: Then go now.
Sunset then approached the Mirror only for Indigo Zap to land infront of her.

Indigo: Whoa, whoa, whoa! She's going we're going with her. Right girls?
As Indigo interjects the girls come to her side and Lemon has a big smile on her face.
Lemon: Oooh! I'm 'nervicited!
Sugarcoat: You do realize that's not a real word right!
Luna: "I'm afraid I can't let you go
Indigo: What?! Why not?!
Luna: Β Sending all of you could upset the balance of this alternate world, creating havoc that would make it impossible for Sunset to get the crown back from Twilight Sparkle. This is something Princess Sunset must do alone!
The girls realize there is no choice the rest of them had to stay behind. Sunset also realize that her friends can't come with her and had to do it on her own.
Celestia: Time is the essence. On the third day, when the moon reaches its peak in the night sky the gateway will close. And once it does, it will be another 30 moons before you will be able to return.
The girls try to cheer Sunset up and give her confidence that she will be find on getting her crown back from the other world.
She got to the mirror and put her hoof in the mirror and take it out again. She looks at Luna and nods her head. Then Sunset goes through the mirror.
Smolder becomes so worried that he rushes through the mirror.
Mane 5: Smolder, NO!

Maybe in some alternate universe, that probably did happen as you never know. Β my LIttle Pony the game did have an alternate universe story where King Sombra sacrificed the good life he had to make the evil Celestia and Luna good while the king became bad.

So this is an alternate scenario where Twily and Sunset Shimmer have traded places ? Twily is what Sunset was and Sunset is what Twily was.
This'd open a whole new view on the canon story.

that's why it's called an alternate universe as I saw Crisis on two Earth's where Lex Luthor was the good rebel leader asking Justice League for help in dealing with the evil Justice League. Another alternate story I saw on Justice League was the evil Justice League taking earth over as their own, and Lex Luthor used a power reducer laser on the fake Superman to take his powers.

What about what if Sunset never change?
As in she defeated Twilight?

Ok What if? Well to make this work Sunset would have had to remain Celestia's student but Twilight still was except she turned evil. Maybe Celestia adopted Twilight as a student as a way to calm Sunset's growing darkness. Twilight then went evil instead of Sunset, while also driving Sunset away from becoming evil due to seeing Twilight's fall. Sunset grows close to Twilight's family and becomes somewhat of a surrogate daughter(she canonically doesn't know her family in the Equestria Girls Holiday Special)
By the time of the show's events, Celestia chooses to tell Sunset the full truth about Nightmare Moon. This would mean Sunset gathers the same ponies as she actively looks for people who can use the Elements, however for rule of cool, there are different Element users. Presumably Nightmare Moon is defeated due to Sunset having more prep time. Skipping ahead I'd say Discord is defeated. During the events of a Canterlot Wedding, Sunset's concerns about Cadence are taken seriously as the two interacted more and she had no familial connection to the Sparkles. The return of the Crystal Empire is dealt with more directly due to Sunset likely having a phobia about becoming an Alicorn as a result of her own developing darkness and her test is about overcoming that fear.
Flipped Equestria girls happens, The battle with Tirek. In the Equestria girls universe, there are now two Twilights and no Sunset. I also am not sure if Spike exists or if he's linked with Sunset due to Twilight leaving.
