Description

Sofia had always been the odd one out in the family.

She was intelligent, responsible, and kind-hearted. She worked mornings at a small bookstore downtown and studied graphic design in the afternoons. Although she lived under her stepmother Claudia's roof, she had never let that woman's cruelty ruin her plans.

Claudia, on the other hand, had harbored resentment toward her for years.

"You think you're so special," she would say every time Sofia got a good grade. "You're just lucky."

Valeria and Camila felt the same way. They were both lazy, capricious, and used to getting what they wanted. They left their clothes lying around, demanded that Sofia clean their rooms, and made fun of her because she couldn't afford expensive dresses or go out every weekend.

"When you have money," Valeria would say, "buy yourself a personality. You already have a pretty face, but it won't do you much good if you keep dressing like a pauper."

Sofia didn't reply. She knew that her natural beauty, intelligence, and discipline stirred in them an envy they would never admit.

That night, when she returned from work, she found the living room covered in fast-food boxes.

There were hamburger wrappers, bags of chips, chicken boxes, and soda cups abandoned on the furniture. Claudia was sitting in front of the television. Valeria and Camila occupied the sofa, laughing as they looked at photos on their phones.

"You're late," Claudia said.

"My shift ended half an hour ago."

"I don't care. Clean the living room."

Sofia put her purse by the door.

"I'm tired, Claudia. I have an exam tomorrow, and I still need to study."

Valeria looked up.

"What a tragedy. The princess has homework."

"I'm just asking you to pick up what you threw away."

Valeria's face hardened.

"How dare you?"

"I didn't say anything wrong."

“You always do the same thing,” Camila interjected. “You act like you’re better than us.”

“I’m not better than you. I’m just trying not to treat others like servants.”

Claudia jumped up.

“That’s enough! You’ll clean everything up before bed. And tomorrow you’ll cancel your plans. Valeria needs you to go shopping with her.”

“I can’t. I have to work.”

“Then you’ll quit your job.”

Sofia stared at her in disbelief.

“You can’t decide that.”

“As long as you live in my house, I can decide whatever I want.”

Sofia knelt down to start picking up the containers. Her eyes were filled with tears, but she refused to cry in front of them.

Then she saw the golden stain on the microwave.

At first, she thought it was a reflection. Then she realized it was floating in the air, slowly rotating like a drop of oil suspended in a vacuum.

"Sofia…" a voice whispered.

The young woman raised her head.

"Who are you?"

"An entity capable of granting you one wish."

Sofia's heart began to pound.

"One wish?"

"Just one."

"I want to leave here," she replied immediately. "I want to have a life of my own. A peaceful life, where I can work, study, and be surrounded by people who respect me."

The entity seemed to lean toward her.

"I can grant it to you."

But before Sofia could finish the sentence, Valeria entered the room. The golden light turned toward her and, inexplicably, seemed to recognize her as the one who had uttered the wish.

"There you are," the entity said. "What is your wish?"

Valeria looked at Sofia. Then she gazed at the floating blur with a mixture of surprise and ambition.

"I want to live in the universe I've always deserved."

"Explain it."

Valeria smiled.

"I want to be beautiful. Not just pretty: I want everyone to consider me perfect. I want Sofia's life: her opportunities, her intelligence, her job, her friendships, and the future she was building."

Claudia and Camila approached, gradually understanding what was happening.

"I want to be beautiful too," Claudia said. "And I want no one to ever look at me with disdain again."

"And I want everything she has," Camila added. "Her money, her clothes, her connections, and her luck."

Sofia stood up.

"No! The entity was talking to me!"

Valeria didn't even look at her.

"There's one last condition," she continued. "Sofia will be the exact opposite of what she is now. She will become obese, clumsy, lazy, and dependent. She will have no ambition or willpower. She will be a dirty, foolish woman, incapable of living without someone feeding her and telling her what to do."

"Shut up!" Sofia shouted.

The entity remained hovering above the microwave.

"Is that your wish?"

"Yes," Valeria replied.

"Wish granted."

The light exploded.

Sofia felt something invisible pierce her body. She tried to grip the table, but her fingers gave way. Her mind filled with a thick buzzing. Her memories began to distort: books seemed boring, her goals too difficult, and work an unbearable burden.

At the same time, her clothes began to feel tight.

Her t-shirt stretched across her abdomen. Her pants They sank into her waist, and the seams began to give way. Sofia breathed with difficulty as her body grew heavier and heavier. Her arms and legs thickened, her belly thrust forward, and her movements became slow and clumsy.

"Stop!" she tried to shout.

But her voice came out weak.

The transformation only lasted a few seconds, though to her it felt like hours.

When the light disappeared, Sofia slumped onto the sofa. Her clothes were torn and stained. The t-shirt barely covered her upper body, revealing a huge, soft belly resting on her thighs. Her pants were ripped in several places, and her breathing was heavy and ragged.

Valeria looked at herself in the dark reflection of the television.

Her face had changed. Her features were delicate, her skin flawless, and her figure slender. Claudia and Camila had undergone the same transformation. Suddenly, the three of them looked like elegant and sophisticated women, completely different from who they had been just moments before.

"Finally," Valeria murmured.

Claudia ran a hand through her shiny hair.

"This is much better."

Camila checked her phone and found it was full of messages from admirers, invitations, and job offers.

Sofia tried to get up, but couldn't manage it at first. She remained seated, panting, with one hand resting on the sofa.

"I have to… study," she murmured.

Valeria turned to her.

"Study?"

Sofia blinked, confused.

"Yes… tomorrow…"

"You don't have any exams tomorrow."

"No?"

"No. You don't have a job or university anymore. You don't need them."

Sofia lowered her gaze. Her mind, once quick and organized, seemed shrouded in a constant fog.

"But… I wanted to…"

"What did you want?"

Sofia opened her mouth. For a few seconds, she tried to remember. Then she frowned.

"I don't know."

Valeria smiled.

"That's better."

From that day on, the three women's lives changed completely.

Valeria took Sofia's place at the bookstore, and everyone welcomed her as if she had worked there for years. Her former colleagues admired her. Her teachers remembered her excellent grades. Even Sofia's friends accepted Valeria without noticing that anything had changed.

Claudia began attending exclusive events. Camila landed advertising contracts and started showing off her travels on social media. The three of them lived in the house as if they had always been rich, admired, and respected.

Sofia, meanwhile, was gradually confined to her room.

At first, she protested.

"I want to go out."

"Why?" Claudia asked. "You'll get tired of it."

"I want to go back to work."

"You don't know how to work."

"I want to see my friends."

"They'll laugh at you."

Each response weakened her will a little more. The magic had made the orders seem reasonable. Before long, she stopped arguing.

“Can I stay here?” she asked in a subdued voice.

“Of course,” Valeria replied. “It’s the only thing you know how to do.”

Trays of fast food, sweets, sodas, and desserts were brought to her. Sofia ate in front of the television for hours. She no longer read or studied. Nor did she care about her appearance. She left her clothes on the floor, slept until noon, and spent her days slumped on the mattress or the sofa in her room.

Her body continued to grow.

Each week she needed looser clothes. First, she stopped wearing tight pants. Then, her T-shirts began to get too small. Eventually, the fabric rode up above her abdomen, exposing more and more of her flabby belly.

“You need another T-shirt,” Camila commented one afternoon, watching her from the doorway.

Sofia sat on the bed, surrounded by empty containers. A plate of hamburgers rested on her stomach, and she'd barely bothered to wipe off the sauce stains.

"This one will still do," she replied.

"It won't cover you anymore."

Sofia looked down. The garment had bunched up under her breasts, exposing her sunken navel and the heavy mass of her abdomen.

"Oh," she said nonchalantly. "I'll just put on another one later."

She reached for a bag of chips, but couldn't quite grab it. Camila handed it to her with a mocking smile.

"Say 'please.'"

Sofia looked up.

"Please."

"That's more like it."

The young woman took the bag and began to eat. Her breathing was slow and heavy. Soon, a harsh burp escaped her. Sofia covered her mouth out of habit, but then lowered her hand, too tired to feel embarrassed.

From the hallway, Valeria laughed.

"Look at her. I used to think she was going to become a famous designer."

"Now her only project is deciding what to eat," Camila replied.

Sofia heard the words, but didn't defend herself.

"What's for dinner?" she simply asked.

Valeria smiled, satisfied.

"Whatever we decide."

"Okay."

And she turned her gaze back to the television.

The magical entity never returned. There was no second chance. Opportunity and remorse were not the only things the villains had. Reality had been completely rewritten: Claudia, Valeria, and Camila possessed the beauty, the money, and the future that had once belonged to Sofía.

And Sofía, locked in her room, continued to grow fat, eat, and obey.

Each night, as her clothes revealed her enormous belly and the uncomfortable sounds of her body filled the room, she could barely remember that she had once been intelligent, brave, and ambitious.

From time to time, she found an old photograph among her things. It showed a slim, smiling young woman with books under her arm and eyes full of hope.

Sofía stared at it for a few seconds.

"What a clever girl," she murmured.

Then she forgot why the photograph seemed familiar, took another bite of food, and sank back into the pillows.

Downstairs, Valeria toasted with Claudia and Camila to their new lives.

The three of them had gotten exactly what they wanted.

And no one came to save Sofia.
