I loved the game Twilight Princess, but I hate how the LoZ games always end with Link getting screwed over and being alone after being so selfless. The hero deserves something besides a 'good job for doing the right thing'. Lamest reward EVER!!Β
But I always wondered what happened to Ganon's third of the Triforce, the Triforce of Power, and imagined how Link would want to see Midna again after their long and hard journey together.Β
Then I saw your picture here and was inspired by the following scene:Β
. Β Link made his way up the long steps to the chamber above. He found it funny in an ironic kind of way. The stairs always seems so long to him. Maybe because he always viewed them as an ending of sorts. An end to his journey. An end to his quest. And...an end to his time with Midna.Β
. Β He knew he was being foolish. She would call him stupid and an idiot. A part of him would agree. After all, she was the princess of the entire Twilight Realm. The mirror to Princess Zelda in Hyrule. And who was he? Some ranch-hand and farm-boy from the rural province of Ordon, spending his days riding his horse, fishing, and tending to pumpkins and goats. He felt like a fool for even thinking what he did.Β
. Β But he couldn't help it. He loved Midna. His heart stopped when Zant nearly killed her. Never in his life had he wanted to kill someone as badly as he wanted to plunge his sword into Zant's skull and twist the blade until Zant's dying scream was ripped from his lungs. But his concern...no...his love for Midna was so much greater. It overruled him. If it hadn't been for his fear for her life, he would have realized how much he loved her then. Not...
. Β ...not when she shattered the Mirror of Twilight...
. Β Ascending the final steps, Link stood before the stand where the Mirror was once held. Despite the raging winds of the desert, the ground of the chamber still sparkled with the dust that was all that was left of the Mirror, shattered as it was into tiny grains of crystal glass. In the rising light of the sun, they glittered like stars. To him, they felt like stars, representing them perfectly.Β
. Β Distant...cold...yet...beautiful...
. Β Link closed his eyes and screamed, howling like the beast inside him as he kicked over the stand in his grief-filled rage.Β
. Β He hated this place. He hated what it had become. In the absence of the Mirror, the desert was beginning to flourish. Several oases had appeared in the short months since it had been broken. Plants and vines grew from cracks in every cliff and rock. Even the stone floor of the chamber was littered with grass.Β
. Β At one point in his life, months ago, he would have considered it beautiful. He loved natural beauty. He loved nature. It was in his blood. Forests. Fields. Animals. The water. The sky. How he used to adore nature in all its glory. He felt so much more at peace there than in the city of Castle Town or at Hyrule Castle where, until a week ago, he served as Princess Zelda's Captain of the Royal Guard. The great stone walls and buildings and streets were fascinating. But cold. Just...cold...
. Β He feels tears start to swell in his eyes and his hands tighten into fists, his knees giving out under him, as the memories of Midna come rushing over him. He remembers how she said the world was so beautiful under the twilight cast. And how he silently nodded his head in agreement. The nights they spent under the starry sky. At Lake Hylia, before they headed up to Zora Domain, sleeping on the bank of the dry lake, and how she curled up against his back, her little hands in his fur, to fight off the chill that drifted down. Or the time in Kakariko, staying in the spare room Renado provided him, before his quest to restore Illa's memory, pretending he didn't notice when Midna moved out of his shadow and into his arms. Or pretending he was still asleep when he held her closer to him. She never knew why he lit that tall candle, preventing it from being total darkness, giving her a shadow from which she could escape from.Β
. Β But then, he didn't know what it was he felt for Midna at the time. All he knew was that he wanted her close. He relished in their contact. He wasn't even annoyed how she dropped onto his back after every time they warped. He just gave her a huff out of habit. Never once did he try to hide his canine grin. A laugh almost came to life when he recalled how he would suddenly break into a dash in the middle of his run. Not to reach their destination sooner. Because he wanted to hear her yelp of surprise. The grunt she gave as she was rocked out of place. The feel of her hands in his fur. Or, that one time, she fell flat against his back just to stay on, staying like that the whole sprint. She bopped him on the nose for that.Β
. Β He considered it worth it. Her laugh. Her smile. Her eyes.Β
. Β Gods and goddesses, she was so beautiful. Her world was amazing in its shades of mixing orange, gold, and darkness with glowing blues, reds, and greens. But her...HER...she was...
. Β He truly was rendered speechless. Beautiful didn't do Midna justice.Β
. Β In his eyes, she was a goddess.Β
. Β And now, like the stars, she was distant and cold...cold...because she was beyond his reach...
. Β The tears flowed freely from Link's eyes, but he didn't try to stop them or open his eyes to blink them away. He missed her. He missed her so much. He thought he loved Illa. He had no idea what love was until Midna came into his life. His heart was filled with the desire to see his love again. For the Mirror to be restored, regardless of what would happen to the desert. It was too unfair and too cruel. He didn't care if she was Twili and he was Hyrulian. The light and the dark could join together and live in harmony. He would prove that to her. Somehow, if given the chance, he would. He'd live with her in the Twilight Realm. He'd stay by her side, even if it meant he could never come back to Hyrule. He tried to live without her. He honestly tried with all his heart.Β
. Β But now, as he felt a thousand times before, yet somehow even moreso now, he felt this deep well inside him pulsing through his body, beating from his heart, calling to his desire and pulling to make it real with every fiber of his being.Β
. Β Yet, Link knew he couldn't. As much as he wished it were so, he knew that couldn't be.Β
. Β And it broke him.Β
. Β Unashamed to the tears, Link opened his eyes and stared down at the stone floor of the chamber, seeing his own face staring back at him, expression of inner agony marking his stricken eyes and clenched jaw, as his fingers dug into the smooth surface of the stone.Β
. Β Then Link's mind caught up to what he was seeing. His reflection. In a smooth, glass-like surface underneath his hand. Familiar circles, symbols, and scripture distorted the reflection with cracks and fissures that were slowly closing, like a wound healing in accelerated time.Β
. Β Confused, Link looked around, and saw the dust of the Mirror of Twilight flying towards him in streams of sparkling stardust. He followed the streams with his eyes to where they coiled around his left hand, the symbol that showed him blessed by the gods, the holy Triforce, blazing and aglow, his Triforce of Courage shining blue, and the Triforce of Power burning red.Β
. Β Shaking his head, Link tried to understand. How did he have the Triforce of Power? He thought it was gone with Ganon! He saw it fade from Ganon's hand after defeating him!!Β
. Β And with that thought, he realized why he now possessed the Triforce of Power. He had proven himself stronger, more powerful, than Ganon. And with his courage, he had only ever used that power selflessly to aid others. As Midna had done in the end with the three pieces of Fused Shadows. True power could only be used for good. The wisdom before power that shielded against the corruption for greater personal gains. For a moment, Link wondered if he was being corrupt by the power now. Restoring the Mirror of Twilight in his selfish desire to see Midna once again. But then he saw past that to the good of his selfish act. The joining of the Twili and the Hyrulian people. To prove they could live together in peace, no matter the personal sacrifice to him. Yes, it was grounded in his desire to be with Midna, but that desire was seeded in love. And how could love ever be corrupt or evil?Β
. Β Link stood as the Mirror of Twilight finished reforming, the last traces of dust filling into its tiniest cracks. Both the Mirror and its stand rose with him. And as he touched it with his alight left hand, the markings on the Mirror ignited and came to life. Stairs of pure energy formed leading to a wall of dawn's shadows where the tunnel to the Twilight Realm stood open and waiting him.Β
. Β The was was open.Β
. Β Midna was just footsteps away.Β
. Β ...if...he truly had the heart to walk through the tunnel, knowing he may never return.Β
. Β ...
. Β A bark-like scoff escaped Link's smirking wolfish lips.Β
. Β He didn't have the Triforce of Courage for nothing.
