Raw furyChapter 9
Jennifer and Rakene had descended the mountain in which his lair was hidden within, and were now trekking through a large, dry forest. It wasn’t hot, but quite cold, the forest still other than flicker of leaves on their branches. No sign of life anywhere.
Jennifer was pretty nervous. Heck, she was in the company of a vampire, off to visit more vampires, in a spooky forest after descending a few hundred feet of mountain. She was tired, but could see Rakene was full of stamina, which irked her.
Jennifer was trudging along reluctantly with Rakene, too exhausted to complain. Her feet dragged along, but Rakene was walking along in a stride.
Finally when she thought her legs were falling off, Jennifer leant against a tree and stopped, exhausted. Rakene looked back, scowling slightly, but walked to join her, sitting himself down on a boulder, and taking out a vial of blood.
“Why are we travelling so far?” Jennifer complained. “Bloody hell!”
“Don’t curse,” Rakene replied simply, ignoring her question. “You never know what those words might conjure.”
Jennifer looked at him.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
Rakene ignored her.
They travelled only as soon as the sunset and hunkered down at sunrise.
After that small break, Jennifer and Rakene continued walking. Rakene often had stop so Jennifer did not pass out, over the long trek they had.
They walked for nights, occasionally taking long breaks to gather up their energy. After a few nights, Jennifer was told they were nearly there.
“Finally.” Jennifer puffed.
That night, when Jennifer was sitting by the fire, with Rakene sitting guard with his back against a tree, they settled down to sleep. Jennifer gazed around. She was completely unaware of the pair of eyes watching from further within the forest.
I see her. She is nothing like my fledgling. Reluctantly dragged along with that so-called vampire. She is still human. Mmmm. I can smell her blood. I can almost taste it. She is so close. One leap and I can devour her beautiful neck, suckle every last droplet of nectar from her. But that stupid ‘vampire’ is on guard, pitiful thing. I could shred him to pieces. I would drink his blood also, if it was not black. Strange creature, hair died grey. Pathetic. But I can smell his power too. He is more human than he realizes, dragged down by emotions that I have rid myself of. He pities that human. I pity her, oh yes, but I also lust after her blood. Unlike my fledgling, whose is still of her age, of her youth. My fledgling possesses stronger powers than any other fledging in my whole ‘coven’. But this human is interesting. Lacking potential, yes, but that can be changed. Alas, she will never know what hit her.
The watcher of the pair smirked to himself, then took out a vial and gulped it down. Seeing leftovers, he tipped the vial and let the last droplet dribble onto a leaf sprouting from a bush beside him.
The blood dribbled in between the leaf, and a droplet fell. Glancing at the pair before him, he turned and left, silent, to wait their arrival.
