Chapter 8

Jennifer went pale. Oh. My. God.
How the hell did she get here? That wasn’t hard to answer. That vampire, Rakene, had obviously brought her here. But why?
Jennifer carefully got up, and looked around the dismal room. She shivered; she was in Rakene’s bedroom, seeing as it was unlikely he had a guestroom.
Moving towards the door, Jennifer hesitated, but then she opened it. Peering through the crack, Jennifer saw Rakene. He was sitting in an armchair in front of the fireplace, nursing a glass of what looked like brandy.
“Do stop hiding, Jennifer.” Rakene said, and Jennifer froze.
Rakene turned his face towards where she stood, frozen behind the door, a slither of her visible through the door.
“Come in,” Rakene said, lip curling. “I don’t bite.”
Jennifer scowled slightly. Pushing the door wider, Jennifer entered the room. Rakene looked back into the fire and sipped his brandy.
“Why did you bring me here?”
Rakene lifted an eyebrow.
“It was too early for me to linger,” Rakene replied. “and I wasn’t going to leave some traumatized teenager in her house after she had witnessed the arrival of two species of dark creature.”
Jennifer’s scowl deepened in anger.
“You just let the werewolf run about? You didn’t even stop it!” she said in disbelief.
“I couldn’t risk you waking and blabbing you mouth off. And I was weakened after the quick fight the werewolf and I had. Besides,” Rakene glanced at Jennifer. “It was soon to be morning, and he would have been finding his way home, to transform back.”
Jennifer crossed her arms.
“So you brought me here because you thought I’d go around telling people about vampires and werewolves?”
“You sound like you don’t believe humans will believe you,” Rakene said curtly. “Even vampires have learnt that they should never underestimate humans. Humans were born with curiosity and an imagination.”
Jennifer went silent. She didn’t want to be standing here in some vampire’s lair. Nah uh.
“I sense you want to leave,” Rakene said, swirling his brandy around in his glass. “The door is just down the hall.”
Jennifer hesitated.
“You’re letting me leave?” she asked, unsure.
“Go before I change my mind.”
Jennifer paused, then sprinted for the door. She completely missed the smirk on Rakene’s face in her haste.
Jennifer found the door and opened it. Its locks were unlocked. Weird. Jennifer swung it open and stepped outside. She froze.
She was standing on a ledge, which was attached to a very big mountain. It overlooked a large, snow covered valley. Her town was no where in sight.
“I changed my mind.”
Jennifer whipped around to see Rakene standing just outside the door, his newly donned cloak crackling in the wind, looking very smug. Jennifer suddenly was very angry.
“What kind of sick joke is this?!”
Rakene’s expression darkened.
“It is no joke, I assure you. I have communicated with the elders of my kind, and they wish for me to attend a gathering. They want to discuss a new outburst of werewolves, and the havoc that they have been causing. You could prove useful, I have been told.”
Jennifer remained silent. Rakene walked towards her, eyes off in the distance. He beckoned her near the edge, and pointed out into the fog.
“You see that spec on the horizon?” Rakene asked, pointing. Jennifer squinted and saw the black dot, nodding. “That is where I travel to.”
Rakene stood straight again.
“I have half a mind to leave you here. Are you coming or not?” Rakene turned to her.
Jennifer frowned.
“I don’t know. If you are going to leave me here, I’d rather tag along.”
Rakene nodded.
“Good. But first I must test you’re stability with maybe shocking things. Some things that will scare you, and see how to handle it.”
Jennifer turned to begin to object but felt the ledge beneath her crumble. With a scream, Jennifer fell.
Spinning slightly as she hurtled down the mountainside, she saw a large piece of jagged rock sticking out, intent on impaling her on it.
Suddenly the motion stopped suddenly, with a large, thin hand gripping her collar. She impulsively gripped this hand with her own, and looked up.
Rakene lifted her up and onto the ledge in which he stood, and put his finger to her neck and temple. He left his there until he felt her heart stop racing.
“Calm down, I was only testing you. You got quite a fright, but I’ve seen human scream louder than that,” Rakene’s lip curled into almost a smile. “Perfect.”
