Chapter 6

Jennifer froze. Her fear intensified until she was becoming dizzy. She could feel his icy, ragged breath on her neck. She stopped breathing when she felt his teeth grazed her skin lightly.

Suddenly, his motion to her neck halted. She felt him clenched his jaw, and his nostrils flare against her cheek. She clenched her eyes shut.
But suddenly Rakene pushed sharply off the wall, away from her, hissing. Jennifer instantly slid down the wall, eyes wide and watching him stagger to the bed.

Rakene sat on the bed, his eyes clear of the red haze, but they were cloudy now, the green iris’s becoming paler. His face had gone way past pale white ad now was taking on tinges of grey, starting to match his hair. His body was slack; shoulder drooped, eyes lids half shut, jaw slightly loose. His fangs had withdrawn only half way, and the milky white was beginning to look dull and blunt.

Slowly, as if causing him pain, Rakene lifted his head, his eyes sliding slowly to meet Jennifer’s. He cleared his throat painfully.

“I do apologise…. Lost control,” his voice was scratchy and he coughed dryly. “I’m late…..on my last feeding.”

“Y-you mean…blood?” Jennifer whispered. His eyes flared momentarily, but he just nodded.

They sat in silence for a moment. Jennifer felt her heart slow down and her pain quench slightly, once she knew Rakene was safe. She shifted.
“I don’t mean to…..appear crude…but ah…. would you mind if,” Rakene croaked, but paused, glancing up at her. “I….feed from one of your…ah…family members?”

Jennifer blanched in horror. Rakene continued swiftly.
“I won’t be killing them. I’ll feed a small amount of blood until I go back to my lair. Vampire saliva has healing properties, so I will just clear up the cut.”
Jennifer looked horrified by the thought, but Rakene was surprised that she was biting her lip in reluctant consideration. Rakene swallowed; his mouth was becoming dry, and Jennifer had a very nice scrape on her cheek that was almost bleeding. His eyes became glued to that spot.
Jennifer still hadn’t answered, and wasn’t sure of what to do. If she said no, well, he’d probably just feed off her, kill her, and be done with it, or; she could say yes and he’d feed, heal it and be done with it.

Rakene couldn’t stand his starvation any longer. H would have to feed soon, or he would become so weak he might pass out. He decided he must coax Jennifer into it.

But, seeing her scared expression, Rakene knew she would finally come to a negative conclusion. Suddenly feeling slightly cold towards her, Rakene decided to exercise his authority.
Rakene stood, a bit shaky, but he stood. Jennifer started, staring up at him.
“Jennifer, I, for one, do not care what you are going to say. If I don’t feed in about 2 minutes I will go unconscious. If I wake up from passing out, I will become nothing compared to what I nearly just did. Control would be mile out of reach. I have reached my own verdict,” Rakene took a step forward. “I will not feed on you, since I have certain sympathy for prey that know their fate beforehand. I will feed on a family member.”

Jennifer’s eyes went wide. She watched him take another step before scrambling to her feet and picking up the knife she dropped earlier. Rakene frowned.
He took another step, arms reaching forward, his face surprisingly gentle.
“Do not fight, Jennifer, just accept it. Calm down. I won’t hurt you.”

Jennifer knew he was talking crap, and walked backwards, away from the window. But his speech, his eyes and his gentle, encouraging hands were being slightly hypnotising, and she felt weaker by the second.

Even though her body was objecting to her retreat, her mind was fully aware of what he was doing. She shook her head, knife raised, but thoughts kept creeping into her mind like ‘just stop backing away, you’ll be alright’ or ‘its ok, you’re safe’, but she knew Rakene was planting them there.

Jennifer started when she felt the wall touched her back, and her heel hit it too. Shit.

In a blink of an eye Rakene took hold of her arms, crushing her to the wall again, and closed her hand over her forehand. It felt like he was trying to crush her skull, and she could feel herself get dizzy. She struggled weakly, but she was passing out. Once she submitted to darkness, she felt material enfold her, and she went unconscious.
