Description Part five of my Pink and Yellow Power Rangers drawings.

This piece features Dana Mitchell and Kelsey Winslow, the Pink and Yellow Power Rangers from Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. Within the context of their series, they were recruited by a military organization in order to combat the demonic forces of Queen Bansheera. Dana, the Pink Ranger, was the daughter of the program director and was a paramedic. She was thoughtful and serious, with a definitively loyalty towards her family. Kelsey, the Yellow Ranger, was a fun-loving athlete who was characterized by her tomboy style and love of sports. She enjoyed rock climbing, rollerblading and never went anywhere without her trusty Walkman.

The great thing about the Power Rangers franchise is there's such a wide range of characters, so there's something for everyone.

I've only seen up until Wild Force (I've got all the reviews on my blog). I took a break because I started watching the original Super Sentai series to see how the various series were originally conceived and portrayed. Keep meaning to finish, but I go through phases of what I'm into. So currently I'm sticking to all the research I've been doing for my DC and Marvel head canon projects.

Cool. I sorta fell out of power rangers after I think maybe Dino Thunder? It’s been a little while

Ahh, I see. For me, during the original run of when I was watching it as it aired, Lightspeed was the last I watched. I guess I kind of grew out of it a bit at that stage in my life and then didn't get back into it since I never knew when it aired. I started rewatching everything a few years back since they're all on Netflix.

Cool! I love the whole concept of a team of diverse heroes who wear matching colour-coded costumes. Though I haven't made any Power Rangers fanworks, I do have original works inspired by the concepts. Notably the Olympian Squadron and Boreal Force in my gallery.

Cool! My series is kinda still in development. Basically the team bonds with a demon and uses demonic based abilities and the Red Ranger will be one of the extra rangers and the yellow, pink blue and black rangers are all half demons while the extra rangers who like I saud are the red abd also green rangers are human

Interesting. Were you going for something really dark? Like, more in line tonally with something like BtVS? It definitely feels like it belongs within the Super Sentai canon. Obviously they didn't shy as much away from the supernatural.

My Olympian Squadron are a team of six colour-coded heroes. It's more fantasy based than the usual Tokusatsu since the heroes are the reincarnated children of Zeus. They're revived by Gaia to battle a primordial evil that destroyed the Greek Gods thousands of years ago.

Boreal Force puts a twist on Pandora's Box. Five Canadian military personnel are scientifically and supernaturally imbued with powers of Canadian animals. They're tasked with putting back the monsters and demons released from a mystical prison.

Nice!! And yeah I am going with a more tonally dark theme more in line with Super Sentai but not on BvS levels. And I haven’t hammered out all the details yet as i’m still struggling on proper villain factions. Any the team initially starts out with the blue yellow, black and pink rangers, meeting one of their mentors who’s actually a demon himself disguised as a human. He gives them their Morphers after an army of demons led by a Demon named Argus breaks free of their imprisonment and they start causing untold havoc on the city of Hyperia Miami, and obviously they have to stop the,, but these for rangers are...shall we say arrogant since they’re not human and have demon forms of their own and eventually it becomes clear that they’re not powerful enough. Thus their second mentor and specifically the mentor of extra rangers attempts to give the new morphers to the green and red rangers who are twins however, the power they wield is actually directly tied with the demons they draw power from and as a result they come close to overwhelming them; with the Green Ranger becoming evil for a time just like in MMPR and the Red Ranger,  it becoming evil but becoming focused on defeating the Green Ranger, and not entirely willing to work with the other rangers. I also feel it prudent to point out that the green and red rangers are twins

In MMPR, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force, and Wild Force, the yellow ranger's Super Sentai counterparts were originally male.

Nice work on Dana & Kelsey, you got their likenesses very well. I like the Lightspeed Rescue uniforms & arsenal, very uniform & functional, appropriate since they're a military sponsored emergency response team. I like the cast as well, Kelsey is fun & lively, quite the daredevil...Though I don't really get why her mountain climbing skills got her selected as a ranger, though she certainly had the athleticism & guts for the job. To be fair, realistically speaking Lightspeed probably should have recruited rangers from the organization itself, like Dana, but it ultimately worked out so its all good...Dunno why being a sea world performer translated into being blue ranger material XD. Dana's skills as a medic could have come up more, but otherwise she was a capable ranger.

I also liked how they handled their mechs & power ups, a big problem with a lot of the later Ranger seasons is how overly toyetic they get, too many power ups and extra zords they frankly don't need & not enough of the ranger's using team work & skill to overcome the monsters...You don't need TWENTY Zords to form a Megazord XD. However, Lightspeed has beautifully designed mechs & they all prove to be very functional & well suited for dealing with different situations, like how the rescue zords are perfect for, well, rescue operations as opposed to existing only to form the Megazord, or how the Rail Rescues offer both transport for the Rescue Zords as well as a bigger, stronger Megazord (I love the Super Train Megazord). Usually I don't like it when they have too many zords, especially when they clump them together to make ugly "cluster zords" or treat them as accessories, but Lightspeed managed their multiple zord teams very well & designed them to actually look functional & cool, so it works out. Heck, even the ranger's weapons and arsenal upgrade felt natural in their ongoing war against the demons as opposed to EXTREMELY FORCED commercialism, & it helps that most of their weapons look like weapons rather than plastic toys powered by spin disks or action figures XD. Sorry if I'm not making sense, the toyetic aspect was always there, I just feel it was more under control in the earlier seasons, & that the mech & weapon designs were better, & handled their introduction & usage better so as not to distract from the characters & story...Helps that the individual zords weren't all rubbery CGI cartoons instead of suits & miniatures either XD (I still like some of the later seasons though, like RPM, that one rocks!)

It DOES suck however that the red, blue, & green rangers all got battlizers but not the yellow & pink rangers. Sad really, especially since the green & blue armors actually looked decent in comparison to the red armor of the season...In general, I'm not overly fond of battlizers, partly cuz they're super toyetic, & partly cuz usually only the red ranger gets to wield them, making them more powerful than the entire team put together, which goes against the spirit of super sentai/power rangers as a team of heroes working together to overcome impossible odds (that and one sided monster battles).

I also enjoyed the monster designs of Lightspeed, & found the main villains & their power struggles very interesting....All except for Vypra of course, her acting...WOW...Just...WOW...XD. Diabolico, Olympius, Lokai, Jinxer, & Queen Bansheera herself were all great baddies however, just not Vypra lol.

Thanks! Glad you like the art here. If you liked this one, I highly suggest checking out my redesigns for the first batch of Rangers in an imagined rebooted continuity. You might enjoy them.

The problem I have with Power Rangers as a whole is that they don't always manage the introduction of new equipment and zords very well, as well as not really knowing how to properly pace their narratives so that it doesn't feel like a season-long trek through filler. I've found that its source material, the Super Sentai series they all originate from, do a better job of actually creating a more comprehensive story and more organic introductions into new equipment and zords. That said, I'm finding that Wild Force thus far is doing a really good job of that. I started watching/re-watching the Power Rangers shows from the very beginning a couple years go, so it's been interesting seeing them all as an adult.

And yes, it's lamentable and silly whenever the female Rangers don't get the kind of cool upgrades that the male Rangers do.

Do you remember watching the episode "In the Limelight"? That's the one where Dana takes up an offer from fashion guru Koko Kashmere to become the Glitz Girl in order to pay her way into medical school. But the fame soon goes to Dana's head, thus making her neglect both her Power Ranger duties and her friends, especially Kelson.

Eventually, while attending a fashion show, and Koko sarcastically asks her if she would really throw away a good fashion career just to be a Ranger, Dana realizes her mistake and genuinely feels bad, so she abandons the fashion show, races to her friends' aid, helps them defeat Treevil, quits the Glitz Girl job (since it really wasn't for her), makes up with the other Rangers, and settles on getting through medical school on her brains instead of her beauty.

In a nutshell, "In the Limelight" has the old "character takes up an offer they can't refuse, goes from rags to riches and lets it go to their head, ignores old friends in favor of a new 'cooler' crowd, almost turns into an egotistical jerk overnight, but then sees the error of their way and goes back to their old life and real friends" sitcom plot, except with a tree monster involved.

It was amusing. Obviously it's very cliched, for the very reason you outlined in that it's a popular plot device for many works of fiction. However, I'm always happy whenever they have episodes that focus on the female members of the team.

I'm surprised you say nothing about the Titanium Ranger, the first and possibly only Power Ranger to have no Super Sentai counterpart (and as a result limits his use to a very small handful of episodes).

He served his purpose well enough - probably better than most other "Sixth Ranger" characters. I typically find those characters to be an intrusive and distracting presence, as they often take away screentime that could otherwise be spent developing the five protagonists. As I've lamented over a few of my reviews, the writers just don't develop their casts well enough sometimes.

This was series of power rangers that I was seriously into as a child. However after watching the episodes again on Netflix I would have to agree with your blog post. The characters weren't as developed as say In Space, but that's a problem power rangers had during the 90's and early 2000's. While I'm glad that Carter, one of my favorite red rangers, was a total badass; he and the rest of the team lacked the three dimensional personalities as future rangers have. Also it has always bothered me that all the guys on this team got battle armor but the girls didn't.

I'm interesting to see when and if things change in terms of the writing. I'm a few episodes into Time Force and am already impressed by the character work they've done thus far. It's certainly a massive step forward from previous seasons. Of course, I was expecting it given the rave reviews the season has received from fans. I'm pretty much like you in that I was crazy about Power Rangers as a kid (Lightspeed Rescue being one of the ones I was craziest about), so it's been interesting watching the series from beginning to end on Netflix.

It can be a bit painful at times do to the cheese factor of some of the episodes from the first season. Time Force is definitely one of the better seasons. The characters in general are better developed, the theme of destiny vs free choice is interesting, overall a great season in my opinion. Both of the female rangers can kick butt, and Jen, the pink ranger, gets a lot more focus then most female rangers ever get. Plus Jen is the leader of this ranger team, unusual considering how the red ranger is often the team leader.
