The Combat Rifle in Fallout 4/76, for some reason, fires .45 ACP, and can be rechambered to .308 Winchester.
The only reason I can think of is that it was an end-of-war production and was mostly intended to get to local troops and rotate out their full-up military rifles to frontline soldiers, and .45 ACP was an underutilized round.
Same reason as the Thompson-based SMG. Β Mainly because they were intended to be used against local riots over food and other essentials. Β Don't need armour penetration, but do need to put down people hard.

I would think they would still somewhat use the 30-06 since they would have left over reserves from WW2 and Post-WW2

Those are long gone today, forget by 2077.

I did wonder why would they bother chambering a Combat Rifle in .45 for a battle rifle itβs a powerful pistol round but would be underpowered for a rifle round IMO
