100 Theme Challenge #29 - "Secrets""Failure...? You think not being able to sell some chimes or keep some lousy job is failure? How about failure to come through on anything, failure to believe in yourself?? To believe you could actually be a real master?
What about the failure to protect the Valley?
...Failure to save your family from the arrows of tyrants...?
Failure to keep your promise to never let that happen again?!
Failure to find chi... Failure to teach chi, and the only student who finds it...uses it to bring back into the world everything YOU dedicated your life to protecting it from?!
Failure in teaching...
Failure in life..."

Okay.....so I came across a video of a deleted scene from the first Kung Fu Panda in which, to be frank, Po is a serious jerk. He and Shifu really hate each other for a while in this version, Po doesn't respect him in the least and is always deriding kung fu (and Shifu constantly has to resist dealing out a deserved punch because it's not in a Master's ethics). Po is still chosen as the Dragon Warrior, however, and this is kinda the turning point of the movie where he and Shifu hit rock-bottom.
One night during late-night training, Po admits that he doesn't want to even bother learning kung fu because he feels he's failed at everything else in his life, and this will be no different. He also tells Shifu "you're good at this, so you can't understand how that feels". At one point, Shifu finally loses his temper and knocks the punching bag clean off the chain (hence why he's standing by a severed chain here), sending Po flying and afterwards almost spearing him to the wall.
And then proceeds to give the monologue above.I really found this scene interesting, especially since it includes Shifu just pouring himself out, and to Po none the less. I can understand why they took it out, I guess, and it further supports my theory that Dreamworks is waiting for the right moment to tell Shifu's story.
Really played with the lighting on this - how does it look?
And for those of you who want to see the scene that this pic was inspired from (it's in storyreel form), I'll be posting a blog on Kung Fu Panda Pals pretty soon all about it and some other deleted scenes.
After I do some preparation for my new class starting tomorrow. 
EDIT: Here's the link if anyone's interested. But be warned that there is some surprising language here you wouldn't expect. This scene was never released on DVD or anything, so the story artist/narrator doesn't censor himself very well at one point. [link]

This is wonderfully done! I love the lighting and the emotion on his face! On the link you posted for the deleted scene, there are pictures, but when I try to zoom in to read them, they get too blurry to read. Could you post what is said in a response to my comment?

Well, the scene is in storyboard form, so you have a guy narrating the action and reading the dialogue. He's the one who says it.

The worst it goes is one instance of the word "sh**" from the narrator.

yes i remember it and i first heard of it from a book called the Art of Kung Fu Panda.
The creators were about to use it until Jack Black change all that.

FINALLY! I got around to watching the video you link us! (I had to go used my mom's iPod Touch in order for the video to view since it came from QuickTime Player) and....well honestly I'm hugely surprised the filmmakers went with a darker path to the story. Could you imagine what the movie would be like if it originally ran like that? I probably wouldn't like it!
That deleted scene you show us prove to be more heavy to me than dark. I can see why it didn't end up on the bonus features for the DVD. I think it would of freak the viewers out! And like you, I'm also a bit surprised by the language they tossed in that scene. It gave me a whole new point of view on Shifu's character more. (I didn't care so much about those poor geese getting those black eyes cause I can't really see Shifu doing that no matter how much of a jerk he could be!) I do love how he ranted about the whole failure thing to Po. Those lines were totally more powerful! If anything similar to those words show up in a real movie someday, it will be remember for years to come! ^^

Well, the whole joke with the black eyes is that the geese gave them to their themselves because they covered their eyes too fast when they heard Shifu's booming voice. XD
And while I love Po like he is, Kung Fu Panda 2 would've certainly felt all the more fulfilling. If he had gone from a jerk like he was in the old draft of Movie One to the maturity he came to at the end of KFP2, that would've been an awesome example of character growth.
I do hope that when we find out about Shifu's real past, it will have that awesome tense atmosphere like it did in this scene.

Interesting enough, Jack Black was the one who changed Po's character. Jack thought that this version of Po is too unlikable because he was arrogant for no real reason. Instead he wanted a fan boy with self-confidence issues and had to learn how to believe in him self. Probably was a better idea because everyone can relate to Po in a way.

Ehh, it wasnt the greatest animation wise, you can tell nick had to do it, the story was good but the animation wasnt fantastic, and i believe that only 1 or 2 of the voices were by the same actors. :\

That scene was pretty dark, but I think it brought out more hidden secrets about Shifu's character. I don't know how well this scene would have worked in the final film, but it's intersting food for thought.
That glare you gave him is full of emotion and the stock that you found is just perfect.

It sounds fascinating. I once heard that Po was more lousy before the writers knew he was gonna be voiced by Jack Black, but from what you've described... wow. Just... amazing.
I'm truly hoping to learn of Shifu's backstory too, even though I have a fear that the first movie was the most we'll get about him.
I cant believe there's gonna be six movies! Ah, fingers crossed for a Shifu backstory in one of them!
I'm dying to get home and see the scene now...
