Description
"Jötnagröf. We Skeggrs have long learned to avoid that place. Many don't even like hearing the name, as if the mere word is a catalyst. That place is already eerie enough, seeing so many dead giants sealed in the ice, as if a great council of the titans was frozen in an instant. Few beasts go there, it even feels like the wind itself avoids that grave, leaving nothing but silence amongst the dead. You cannot imagine how unsettling it is to walk that land and hear nothing, yet that isn't even the worst part. The worst part is when you can hear it, that pounding down below within the frozen flesh. Their hammers working in the deep. And all your mind can wonder is what are they making this time...?"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The image of the Skeggrs is one of strength and honor, a people fit to be proud warriors. Even in times of peace, they have shown to have great courage and a love for the fight. A good brawl always puts them in a good mood, which typically calls for celebration shortly after. In a land of harsh weather, powerful predators and other eager warriors, Skeggrs seem hardened and ready for anything. Yet, there are things that give them pause. Some situations that even these hairy folk back away from. They may love to show off their strength and prove their honor, but there are some cases where it simply isn't worth it. There are certain beasts you leave alone, fights with terrible odds that you shouldn't join, and specific islands in the Aurgelmir Archipelago you steer clear of. Skeggr legends speak of many fights and victories, but they also tell of ominous events and dangerous lands. Beings that wander the frozen wastes, phenomenons that should be avoided. And out of all of them, there is one that is brought up the most. A place where Skeggrs rarely want to be, many clans considering the area forbidden. Yet people are drawn to it, even some Skeggrs cannot resist it. An island out there in frozen maze of the archipelago, a place where many giants lay in their tombs. Great spires of ice that house these titans, making mountains and glaciers from their huge corpses. It only takes one look to see that this island is a graveyard, a land of ice and silence. Some say that this place, Jötnagröf, should be left in peace in respect for the dead. Yet it is not the dead giants that make Skeggrs nervous. Despite its appearance, Jötnagröf is not devoid of life. It is not the frozen titans that you should look at, but what lurks within them.
If one were to visit this isle and look at the great carcasses, they would see that they have not been left in peace. A sharp eye may notice certain openings in the glaciers, and something winding through their icy hearts. Like a massive termite colony, countless tunnels have been made within, boring through ice and frozen flesh all the same. The first assumption would be Corpse Weasels feeding on the plentiful flesh, or maybe Monk Worms making a nest in the ice. Yet the tunnels are too clean, too precise. There is architecture to their layout and design. These glaciers and their dead aren't some feeding ground or resting place for random beasts, but a home for something far stranger. Diminutive things move through the tunnels, vanishing into the flesh of titans. At night, some lights can be seen from deep within the ice, and a careful ear can hear things bustling both around and below. Most outsiders to the archipelago have heard them through legend, a race so secretive that they might as well not exist. But for the Skeggrs, the Mathkr are very real. Far too real for their liking.
Few have actually seen a Mathkr, for their kind has only ever been found in Jötnagröf. There have been wild claims of miners from other lands spotting one in the deepest tunnels, yet they vanish without a trace. Those who try going after them are said to vanish just the same. No solid evidence has ever been found to show that the Mathkr exist elsewhere, but it is hard to say anything certain about these beings. The only unchanging fact is that Jötnagröf is their home, their kind living within the frozen bodies of the dead giants. They have created a complex network through the glaciers and flesh, chaining many carcasses together with their tunnels. These titans have slowly been hulled out, chambers made within, a great corpse practically turned into a castle. It is a morbid thought, to have one's body turned into a house for another, but in this world, is man any different? Regardless, it seems very fitting for what the Mathkr are.
With a max height of four feet, the Mathkr are small compared to man, especially the Skeggrs. But these beings are not human, for their bodies are pale and flabby. Though humanoid in shape, they bear more similarity to bug larvae, specifically maggots. Their flesh is soft and membranous, white in color with tufts of hair sticking out from their folds. Small and stocky, they possess short legs and two pairs of arms. One set of arms is more prominent than the other, no doubt used for most tasks. The smaller limbs on their chest are mostly used for holding objects or helping them grip when climbing. Their round heads have two large, unblinking eyes, sitting above a "beard" of bristles. Hidden within that cluster are two fangs that can secrete a digestive fluid, the mouth that absorbs the liquidized food has yet to be found. Some believe that the "beard" itself draws in the nutrients, which could fit with their messy eating. This same beard is how they speak, using stridulation for their buzzing, chittering language. Much of their biology remains unknown, as no specimens have ever been recovered for study. Even the Academy has been unable to secure a corpse, leaving all current knowledge gained from observation.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"I..I..I saw one! I saw a Mathkr! Down there! I swear to the gold I saw it!"
"Have you been huffing the corpse fumes? There's nothing down there! Probably just some bug or fat cluster that your worthless eyes mistook."
"No, it was real! I swear! Its down there, I will prove it! Let me-"
"Don't even think about it, you idiot! You know what the stories say about those who go chasing after those illusions?! If your useless self goes disappearing, the boss is going to make it my problem! We go back up and you say nothing! You didn't see squat!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
This description of their anatomy has been pieced together from stories, as glimpses of exposed Mathkr are rare. These beings dress themselves in thick garb, with furs, woven hair and strange plating. A variety of goggles and masks have been noted, with some wondering if there is more to them than just function. A current idea is that the masks Mathkr wear are a part of their identity, a way to tell each other apart. Much of their culture and society is unknown, for they live in one of the most isolated environments in the world, and rarely leave their homes. Yet there is one aspect of them that is very well known, perhaps even infamous.
The Mathkr are busy creatures, the stories from the few who have seen parts of their colony noting constant bustling. They always seem to be working on something, digging areas in the ice or excavating deeper into the giants' bodies. Tools and workstations are everywhere, even the oldest areas still have signs of in progress renovation. The sheer expanse of their massive network is not fully known, but is guessed purely by looking at the many tombs that cover Jötnagröf. If the Mathr have breached into every giant there, then it could easily be the size of a city. And there is no telling how deep down it all goes. Stories elsewhere claim that Mathkr sightings only occur at the furthest depths that man can reach, with the idea that these maggotfolk are somehow able to go even further than that. Perhaps they do exist in other lands, but are so far down that humanity simply doesn't run into them. Or maybe it is all just one big colony, living below the world of man. No one knows for sure, but the rare sightings of Mathkr give the current idea that they are a small and secluded population. It is hard to learn more about their colony because they don't like intruders, rarely allow visitors and being in their network is an absolute pain. Mathkrs build their tunnels and homes only for themselves, meaning the ceilings are quite low. Skeggrs practically have to crawl on all fours to fit through, and even shorter humans have to constantly be crouched. But while it is hard to see what they do inside, the things that have come out from Jötnagröf make one part of their culture very clear.
What makes the Mathkr so legendary and sought after is their forging ability. Their level of craftsmanship cannot be beaten, as their techniques are truly bizarre. While man works with Yellow Bile to forge with bone, the Skeggrs claim that the Mathkr use no flame. Their canvas is made from Tears, Rot, and even Blue Blood, the latter fluid making folks really question how far down their reach goes. Eitr is said to be used, but its flame is not the point. They use these fluids in strange combinations, forming weapons and tools in impossible ways. The term "cold forging" has been granted to the Mathkr way of working, somehow able to run a full forge without a speck of fire. The legends say these forges are massive, built within the guts of giants. The flesh, bone and organa of their dead hosts are incorporated into the design, hearts pumping fluid into their crucibles and lungs acting as huge bellows. The Mathkr work tirelessly on their creations, using hammers and other tools to shape it all. While a single Mathkr can make tools and weapons by itself, it seems that there are huge projects that call for many of them to work the forge. These maggotfolk are driven by this act of creation, obsessed with making bigger and better. And the rare weapons that have left Jötnagröf prove their craftsmanship, as there is truly nothing like what the Mathkr make.
Their creations tend to have a myriad of holes on their surface, a strange design akin to a termite infestation. Strange grooves run through their handles, warped openings glow with an internal light. Mathkr made equipment is quite light, as if it has been completely hollowed out, yet its durability is on par with verdigris. Those who have had the honor of wielding one always mention how light they are, but then are caught off guard at how hard they strike. They seem to hit with more force then seems possible for something of their weight, and there always is some fluid infused with it. Many tools have Tears inside them, causing strikes to instantly freeze targets and crystalize wounds. Some hold Blue Blood within, their blows draining foes and powering up the weapon. And with all that, they never need refilling, their edges never growing dull or brittle. Man can certainly craft stuff that can compete with sharpness and strength, yet the combination and appearance in Mathkr make has yet to be replicated. Any part of their forging process has failed to be understood by humanity. If you want to see true frustration and despair, visit the section of the Academy where the researchers trying to crack cold forging work.
The desire to understand their techniques isn't just because of their weapon making, as Mathkr can make far more than simple blades. Their forges can work with more than bone, chitin and keratin, it can even shape flesh and other elements. Things that couldn't possibly function like molten ivory, yet the Mathkr go at them with hammers as if they were a common material. Fluids and forces are shaped by them, leading to creations that just can't be replicated. Constructs made of bizarre materials, given life that goes beyond anything man's Black Bile can do. Equipment with abilities that seem supernatural, fleshy beings emerging from their forge as if born from a womb. How the Mathkr do any of this remains one of the greatest mysteries, and probably will be forever. They do not like sharing details of their work to others, the rare visitors to their colony shooed from their forges once they begin crafting. The entire art of forging is their religion, the sound of hammers a chorus within their fleshy cathedrals. To create is to worship, it is a part of their very being.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"What are you looking at? Oh, eyeing that Mathkr blade of his, eh? Well don't bother getting all excited, it's a fake. Worthless forgery to try and make himself look cool."
"How do you know its fake?"
"Because he's carrying it out in the open. If you had a real deal Mathkr weapon, you wouldn't ever be showing it off in public. That's a recipe for getting robbed or murdered."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
With the alien techniques of their forging and their incredible creations, Mathkr craftsmanship is highly sought after. The few weapons that have wound up in human hands are priceless, so wanted that owners rarely remove them from their vaults. The Academy has been able to acquire one or two, but even these fail to enlighten them on how the whole freaking process works. Most of the items of Mathkr make that exist remain on the Aurgelmir Archipelago, under the care and watch of Skeggrs. Some wield them, while others keep them as heirlooms and reminders. Of course there are the whispers that some families couldn't get rid of these weapons if they tried. Sure, they could sell them for exorbitant prices to an eager collector, but the legends claim that the blade would be back in their home by the end of the night. For a people who love battle and being a warrior, one would expect the Skeggrs to be thrilled to be neighbors to such incredible craftsthings. Yet they look upon the Mathkr with worry and fear. There was a time when the Skeggrs yearned for Mathkr creations, visiting that forgotten place to get the impossible made. And the legends say that there were moments when the Mathkr agreed, and worked their forges to fulfill their desires. When it was done, and the creation was granted to the Skeggrs, they soon learned that they very much do not want Mathkr stuff. The legends make it very clear why.
Despite the fear Skeggrs show when the Mathkr are brought up, it has been said that they are not a malicious species. Though highly secretive and practically isolationist, they do not show an inherent hostility towards others. Even the Skeggrs acknowledge that the maggotfolk are not evil. The issue is that the Mathkr only care about their creations and other Mathkr, what happens to man and others is not their concern. They are obsessed with their work, and very rarely wish to be distracted from it. Those who try to call upon the Mathkr for aid will find that they are more annoyed than angry, though that brings little comfort when they sink your ship for bothering them. Their refusal to work for many people is because they find the requests boring or beneath them, or they are just simply not in the mood. Any coming to Jötnagröf are warned to immediately leave if their requests are rejected or ignored, lingering or trying to convince them leads to bad things. Is it because they hate humanity? No, they just have grown sick of man knocking upon their door and demanding things. Boring things at that. Their forges are for them, for their journey.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"By the gold, look at all these ships! Its like a graveyard! And it is not just Skeggr ships, I recognize some of these....the Church of Divine Wealth! The Academy of Veritas Mundus! Some of these belonged to them! And that one, that design! It looks like from one of those dynasties from across the sea! And...is...is that a Celebrant ship?! How old are these wrecks?! Some of these must have been here for centuries!"
"That they have, and you best learn the lesson they refused to accept: when they say "no," the answer is "no." You try anything funny after that, I'll throw you overboard myself and hightail it out of here. I have no intention of joining the others."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
But the legends do tell of moments when the Mathkr agree, when the calls into the empty graveyard are answered. There is no telling what the secret is to gaining their approval. It is known that the Skeggrs have a better chance of dealing with the Mathkr than the other races of man, as traditions passed down amongst the generations have told them how to interact with the maggots. There is a whole ceremony to asking for their help, a way to approach their home without dying horribly. Not many Skeggrs like to divulge these secrets or the location of Jötnagröf, but enough coin may make it possible. Some may point outsiders to the island and tell them "good luck," knowing there is a high chance they won't return. The Mathkr are particular about things, and irritating them leads to demise. It is certainly a reputation that has helped them be left in peace, so that they can work on their next masterpiece. However, they have made things for man, with a number of them for the Skeggrs. Legendary creations that seem impossible, that still baffle the minds of modern forgers and thinkers. They are incredibly powerful, and that is where things go wrong.
When the Mathkr are given inspiration for their work, they let the muse take them away. The forgers eagerly gather materials and draw up plans. The whole thing is like an elaborate ceremony, a ritual that spans the entire colony. The glaciers light up with shaped energeiai, the pounding of hammers shake the ice. They are forging a masterpiece, and all they care about is making it perfect. The request given to them may be monumental in concept, but require a straightforward execution. One wants a way to destroy a huge glacier blocking a crucial route through the archipelago, creating a channel that would save days of travel. It doesn't need to be complicated, but that is human thinking. The Mathkr see that and run wild with it, letting the forges guide their hands. The projects become huge, growing in power and ability as the maggots revel in epiphanies. As long as it can do the job it was tasked, they don't care what the humans think, they don't even process it. When their creation emerges from the ice, all the Mathkr can see is another masterpiece, blind to humans that are scared out of their mind.
Though they do the job, the power within them is too much for man to handle, and they soon lose control. The things haunting the archipelago are infamous examples of that, creations of the Mathkr that live on. After enough instances of that, Skeggr kind quickly came to the conclusion that the Mathkr should be left alone. Especially since they can totally curse their creations if angered by their customer. Their hammers can infuse foul energeiai just like one infuses a fluid, resulting in weapons that bring misery to all those around them, the wielder included. This only occurs for the few foolish who antagonize the Mathkr, though many others may suffer from their actions.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"Take it back! Take it back, I beg you! Free me from this foul blade! Take it! Destroy it! Anything! This accursed thing took everything from me! My rule, my honor, my son! I will do anything you ask to make up for my wicked deeds, but please, get this damn thing away from me! How long must I suffer for my crimes, how long will you let this thing gnaw away at my very being? Answer me! Please! Do not leave me in silence! Tell me what I must do!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Mathkr remain a mystery to much of the world, and it doesn't seem like that will ever change. They are content being isolated in this frozen grave, trying to achieve their next Masterwork. Though many have given up trying to establish any kind of communication with them, there are still those who cannot ignore the allure of their creations. A legendary weapon that could best any foe, a living construct that could achieve the impossible! It is an intoxicating thought, and eventually they find their way to the shores of Jötnagröf. The call will go out to the silent graves, and most likely nothing will respond. Wise men will know to quickly leave, but those who have gone this far typically lack some kind of survival instinct. They have ignored the countless shipwrecks around the island, the frozen remains of past fools smeared on the ice. The Mathkr don't like to be bothered, and they may swat away such annoyances like how one smashes a fly. The Skeggrs know this well, and thus they keep far away from Jötnagröf. But the thing that scares them most about visitors to that dead isle? The idea that the Mathkr may take up the request. To see those lights, to feel the hammers within the ice. Wondering what will be born from their bizarre forges, and what will be inflicted upon their homes when it is unleashed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"You are sure getting a good laugh about us being wary of the Mathkr. Think it funny that a bunch of big tough warriors are scared of little bugs? Hmmph. You outsiders are all like this, think we are just dumb brutes who fear what we don't understand. The Academy folk that come by here give us that same attitude. And you know what? I'll tell you what I told them. The next time you see a storm brewing out there on the frozen sea, billowing in out of nowhere? Grab your boat and sail right into it. Go greet the big guy when he comes up. Bet you my beard you'll be leaving that smug grin of yours in the sea when you are screaming your way back to shore."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------
Wooooooo, we are finally here! Been waiting so long for these little things to make an appearance! There are some interpretations of Norse mythology that says the dwarves were the maggots of Ymir. Now I don't know the validity of such statements, but for FOI, it was a concept far too good to pass up!

Now we got dwarves in FOI.
Is this universe is going to have light and dark elves?

I’m actually very curious, what are the opinions concerning the Mathkr for the other factions? Church of Divine Wealth, The Four Pillars, Rhizakardi, Academy.

For many folks who are not Skeggrs, the Mathkr are so remote and isolated that they almost feel like myth. A race that barely anyone has interacted with that can also create legendary weapons and constructs with techniques that make no sense? Sure sounds fake! I imagine there are a fair share of commonfolk who feel that they are more legend than real. But, of course, the bigger parts of each faction would know that they exist, as eventually everyone has given it a shot at making contact with them. Except the Rhizakardi, as they don't leave the woods. The Church would have tried to make contact, been shot down and then just leave them alone, deeming them not worth the effort and also so remote that they don't pose a threat. The Academy would be the party most interested, as they want to know how to forge like the Mathkr and how they make such insane automaton. There would be respect and admiration, but a fair share of frustration because the Mathkr also don't really talk with them and will not share a shred of their techniques with them.

I have a theory! The maggotmen see the flow of energiai and the patterns of the solid, thus guiding them using other energiai to perform incredibly precise machining and aligning for their craftsmaking, similar to architect termites and their vision of black bile

Awww little cuties~! A lovely, literal take on that Dwarven theory. Part of me wishes we would get a bit more insight into how their creations backfire, but that last quote implies we may just see a few yet.
Also, have we seen the Giants yet?

We have not yet. Been really struggling with those big guys.

They're kinda ugly cute until they put ON their masks. Then it just becomes actually terrifying.
That last paragraph gives me a funny idea though.
"..." Nihilus cautiously followed the fellow he dwarfed in height and stature. The bug-eyed thing had fished him out of the drink with that weird Rattler that... Well, he wasn't sure if it was a construct. He hadn't ever seen no construct with flesh and chitin on its bones... Let alone one that could fly AND pick up Nihilus's sopping wet body like nuthin'. Nihilus was pretty sure he was dead when the weird figure approached him once dropped onto the cold ice of what he'd later learn was Jötnagröf. Of course, his Skeggr friends repeatedly told him to never, EVER go near that place, and in every normal circumstance he'd never be caught dead here. But that weasel of a boat captain and his bald face lies about finding something from Nihilus's time in the archipelago drew him in, and he didn't know any better til they stumbled across the graveyard of ships. Nihilus, when he figured out what was going on, tried to beat the captain to death and take command... Before that strange leviathan-looking thing appeared and tore their vessel to shreds. He had never seen no Leviathan what looked like that thing before, and if the Fluids blessed him, he'd never see it again!
It was a diligent creature, whatever it was. Finished off all the crew. He admittedly took some degree of pleasure seeing that captain get grabbed by those rending jaws and torn into pieces... Though, Nihilus was a bit unsure why he wasn't grabbed. The Ancient Immortal had been clinging hopelessly to one of their rowboats when he locked eyes with that thing, yet it left him be. The strange bat-like thing made from what seemed to be chitin and flesh snagged him afterwards, and he was brought ashore. Yet, here he was, following the maggot-man. He only vaguely understood a lick of what the guy told him, but he was able to discern 'you, follow me'... And with that weird flesh-chitin construct bat-lookin thing right there, and the leviathan-thing still in the water, the lanky mutant was taking his chances with the bugman.
Nihilus narrowed his eyes as he had to basically drag himself through the narrow passageway carved into the frozen giant corpses. 'This is gettin' uncomfortable.' Nihilus thought, since his clothes were pretty restrictive. 'Wherever this freakshow is takin' me, I hope it's a little more open...' "Hey, mate. Where we headin'?" Nihilus asked, his tone as polite as possible.
... No response. Nihilus ran his tongue over his teeth as he tried to keep calm. "<Hey, bud-dee.>" Nihilus said, trying to mimic the language. He had been taught some very basic maggot-kin language by a linguist who was eager to talk to anyone who was interested in a bar. 'Milo is gonna lose his rot when I tell him I met an actual maggot-man.' Nihilus found himself thinking. The Mathkr paused and looked back at him, his expression unreadable. "Errr... <Are we close?>"
"<No. There is much left to go.>" The Mathkr responded, short and cold. Nihilus sighed and shrugged, picking up the pace as much as he could.
It would take some time, but they FINALLY got to an area where Nihilus could stand up. When reaching that area, Nihl immediately did so, stretching out his lanky limbs. "AHHH that's better!" Nihilus quickly shut up when several of those weird flesh constructs surrounded him, causing his hair to stand on end. "Ah, rot! S-sorry!" Nihilus quickly assumed a crouching stance, thinking his height was the problem, but when he stayed silent... That's when they wandered away. 'Quiet in the library, I guess.' Nihilus thought, though when he actually bothered looking around, he realized he was no where NEAR a library. Instead, it was a strange... Thing. It looked kinda like a forge, but utterly alien! Built throughout the bowels of a frozen giant, its guts remade and repurposed. It made Nihilus deeply uncomfortable, especially with he felt how it was... breathing somehow. Nihilus shrunk under the perception, ears folded down and posture meek. 'I want to be anywhere else right now. I'd rather be strapped to a pyre right now!' Nihilus thought, panicking a bit until he was poked harshly by a Mathkr. This one was a bit bigger than the first one, was dressed more ornately as well, with lots of strange and alien tools dangling off both of his belts. Several lenses fused together to create one large array of eyes was like some sort of alien jumping spider! Nihilus always hated jumping spiders, and this was not helping. "Uh... <Hello.>" Nihilus said, tentatively bowing to this strange figure.
"<Greetings.>" The figure began, his weird buzzing and chittering language being hard to comprehend. Despite the language barrier, Nihilus could just tell... This dude was old. 'Ah, so they have elderly eccentrics even here.' Thought the Immortal Hunter. "<You are a unique case, aren't you, outsider?>"
"Hrm. <I like to think I am.>" Nihilus responded, raising an eyebrow. Where was this going?
"<You are durable, yes? And strong?>"
"<Those are a few of my strengths, yes.>" Nihilus said, though he was kinda mixing both the Mathkr's language and the Skeggr's languages in an attempt to fill in the countless gaps. Mercifully, it seemed at least this one knew Ice-Tongue.
"<Then you will work. Follow.>" Nihilus blinked then nodded, following. He was certainly very, very confused, but if he tried to flee those flesh constructs would grab him no doubt, and the sheer number of bustling Maggotfolk would trip him up if he even got past the constructs. He did have to admit... He liked the look of this place, ignoring the forge. It was like a large termite city! Y'know, just made out of frozen corpses instead of clay and bone, which admittedly made it less homely.
...
CRACK! Nihilus swung the strange weapon and caused it to crack right in half against the target dummy, which appeared to be a repurposed chunk of boat hull. Nihilus looked down at the weapon as it bled out, seeming confused, watching the blue blood seep out onto the ground. 'I was told Mathkr weapons were unbreakable. But this is the fourth one I've snapped clean in half...' Nihilus looked up at the Elder Mathkr. "<Oi, mind if I ask what I'm doing?>" Nihilus asked as he handed the broken sword-like thing off to a construct.
"<You are testing the creations of our new forge.>" The maggot man said, a troubled tone to his voice.
"<Huh. That forge producing duds?>" Nihilus asked with a degree of confusion. "<Ah! N-No offense meant.>" He could tell the mere suggestion of fault in their creations irked the other Mathkr which were working on their own projects nearby. "<Just seems odd I can break your legendary creations.>"
"Hmm. <You figure things out quickly, Outsider.>" Mused the Elder Mathkr (which Nihilus was dubbing 'Elder Chitters' in his head). "<Yes. Our newest forge has been creating rotted work... And it has begun to poison the Mathkr which work at it.>"
"<Sounds to me you have a rotten forge, Sir.>" Nihilus rubbed his chin as he was handed another weapon, this one a spear. He sniffed it curiously, ears twitching 'til he just suddenly licked it. YUCK! That was foul! But... Uniquely foul. "Urgh... Ah. <Might need to stop using it, sir. A good craftsman shouldn't use a cursed tool, right?>" Nihilus usually believed in 'a bad smith blames his tools', but for these works of macabre art shouldn't be so fragile. The Mathkr elder seemed deeply troubled, not helped when Nihilus broke the spear in two after stabbing deeply into the dummy. Nihilus flinched and quickly drew the freshly snapped half up to his nostrils, sniffing at it curiously... "AH!!!" he exclaimed, causing everyone to turn and glare at him. "Geh... <Sorry, sorry, my apologies, sorry!>" Nihilus profusely apologized, assuming a meek position. He could tell he was wearing their patience thin... "<Errr, Sir. If I may. I think I might know-- Err, have an idea what's wrong with that forge.>"
"<How would you know more about Mathkr forging than we would?>" Snapped one of the Mathkr, who was sounding a little hoarse. Nihl guessed he was one of the workers tending to the spoiled forge, leading to failing health.
"<I truly don't.>" Nihilus quickly admitted, "<... But I know a thing or two about rot.>" He tapped the broken shaft.
...
The dim forge was still extremely unnerving. Made from the body of a deceased, frozen giant. But unlike the ones further up, this giant just smelled... Distinct. Nihilus knew instantly what was going on the second he stepped foot in the forge chamber, causing his posture to become rigid and on guard. The elder motioned to Nihilus in a 'go ahead' manner, who nodded and hopped up onto the exterior of the forge. This instantly caused a deep upset among the working Mathkr, but Nihilus was trying to ignore it. With his clawed digits, he tapped around the exterior, sniffing and huffing as he looked for something. "Ah-ha." Nihilus said quietly, trying to not make too much noise. Those Flesh Constructs were watching again. He shimmied his way to one of the valves leading into the forge, which he then squeezed into after shedding most of his clothes. It was FREEZING in here, but Nihilus powered through it... Clenching his teeth as his eye slits darted around. Finally, he spotted what he was after. "There you are."
Nihilus jumped down and nearly fell into the accumulated liquids which stewed at the bottom. A Clawshot managed to prevent him from falling it, while still allowing him to get in reach. "I know you're in here, you pissant." Nihilus grumbled through clenched teeth. His eyes widened all the way, pupils dilating as he reeled back... And shot his hand forward. "SKREEEEE!!!!"
"BLIGHTER!" Nihilus threw a Shamhir against the interior wall of the Giant's Forge, the thing 'yelping' as its chitinous form was tested by the sheer impact. Before it could fall back into the drink, Nihilus snagged a floating rod of ivory(?) and threw it-- Skewering its midsection. "HA! HA-HA!" Nihilus swung over and wrestled the thing, which was the size of a legion shrew, into submission. "Gods, I don't miss the smell of you." Nihilus growled, his own flesh rotting from Alkahest exposure. "Wish you lot went extinct along with those blighted Envoys."
After a few minutes, Nihilus crawled out of the forge and jumped down in front of the Mathkr-- Wearing nothing but his underclothes. "<Here, Sir. Your foul sickness.>" Nihilus presented the still-thrashing Shamhir, which had Amber gum jammed into its mouth in addition to the rod kebabbing it. "<The reason you are getting sick is Alkahest.>" The Mathkr elder took the Shamhir before handing it to a construct, Nihilus hastily getting his warmer clothes back on. Damp, but better than bare. "<It was hiding in there. Probably ruining the whole thing... And making your kin sick.>"
"<How did we not find it before?>" Elder Chitters asked, mostly towards other Mathkr.
"<Don't be upset with them. That type of Shamhir are very good at hiding in plain sight. They used to be used as spies.>" They were also used as saboteurs but Marr had no idea how to say that in either language. He figured these lot never met the Envoys of Silver-- Which made sense. The North was generally left alone-- And the Envoys were far too busy with butchering the Church to bother chasing myths like Mathkr. "<Throw it in the ocean, may it freeze and vanish.>" Nihilus sighed as he scratched at the festering silver wounds. He hated fixing Alkahest wounds-- Had to strip off all the flesh and even cut off the bone before he could begin to regenerate. That stuff hurt! "<I won't tell you what to do, but might want to...>" He had to say this next part tactfully, "<Leave this forge alone after flushing it out. Silver toxins can linger, and I don't believe it wise to work where its fumes and true rot may be.>" Nihilus would normally hate feeling like a groveling wyrm, but he had heard of maggot-men just shanking people who upset them, and he was unarmed-- They had taken his stuff after fishing him out of the sea. Speaking of fumes... He was starting to feel lightheaded. "<Ah... May I suggest... Doing so... Nnnnn...>" Before the lanky mutant could finish, he collapsed. Over-exposure from being inside the forge's guts got to him at last.
...
"<I'd like to thank you for your hospitality, Sir.>" Nihilus said as he traveled towards the surface. It had been a few days now, about 3 to 5 days, not that Nihilus could easily tell underground. It turned out, the Mathkr had burrowed into a frozen giant which had a hidden bounty of Alkahest, which they managed to avoid stumbling into during their digging. They 'knew there was something off' while digging, so they weren't clueless, simply unawares. Honestly, Nihilus found their instincts keeping them safe rather impressive! He helped them track down and drain away any Alkahest pockets (kept mostly in the giant's liver, bladder, and stomach-- Go figure) and clear out the small number of Shamhirs which had ended up there. In exchange for his help (if you could call it that, since he didn't exactly have a choice) he was taken care of (given food, medical care, and new clothes-- Though to say it was all 'odd' by Nihilus's reckoning would be an understatement), and now was being sent on his way. "<I know you didn't have to go this far for me.>"
"<I know.>" The Mathkr he was with said rather curtly. He didn't care for how cold the vast majority of the Mathkr were towards him despite his help, but it could be much worse! "<Giyartanthai will take you where you need to go.>" Nihilus nodded, looking from him to "Giyartanthai", which was a flesh construct which looked a bit like a dragon, but without the majesty of it. Apparently, this one could fly like a dragon, and judging by the white coloration it likely wouldn't be spotted. Nihilus nodded and began to approach, but he heard the quick shuffling of someone. He turned and found himself catching sight of a younger female Mathkr. He had called her Little Bell because she wore a small chitin bell on her mask. "<Ah!>" Nihilus quickly approached and helped her just before she tripped. "<Hello, Little Bell. Did you come to see me off? That makes me very happy.>" By now, Nihilus was getting pretty fluent in their weird tongue.
"<Yes. And, I wanted to give you this.>" Nihilus's eyes widened when Little Bell produced something from her bag, handing over a beautifully made Mathkr Freezing Battleaxe. "<For helping us. For helping me.>"
"..! I... <Little Bell, this is an extremely generous gift, I don't know if I can accept.>" Nihilus quickly said, a bit of nervousness in his tone.
"<... I made it for you, Sir Nihilus.>" Bell said, holding it up a bit more... As much as she could without losing her balance. The Ancient blinked and gently took it into his hands, feeling the heft of it. Lightweight, and full of Tears. It was just like the ones from legend. Nihilus found himself tearing up a bit. "<Do you not like it?>"
"<It's wonderful.>" Nihilus said, gripping it firmly. "<I shall treasure this forever, Little Bell.>" Nihilus then snapped his fingers and dug around in his coat, producing a nice little medallion Nihilus had made himself in the past. "<Here. For you. To remember me by, eh?>" Nihilus said, watching as Little Bell gingerly took it... Then held it close to her chest. It was hard to tell, but he was pretty sure Bell was happy. The first Mathkr made a noise akin to a human 'ahem', causing Nihilus to flinch. "<If I can, I'll be back.>"
"<... I wouldn't advise it. Stay safe, mighty Hunter.>" Little Bell said, patting his hand before she turned around and returned to the tunnels. Nihilus looked down at the battleaxe before he gently placed it on his back, then approached Giyartanthai. "Take me to the town of Freezemohr." Giyartanthai screeched at him before jumping up, snagging Nihilus by the shoulders, and taking off on frozen winds. "AIE! You..! Sure have a tight grip, don't you?!" Nihilus snarled as the sharp talons dug into his flesh. Nihl huffed, looking back at the shrinking island of Jötnagröf, the last time he'd ever see it, doubtlessly. ... Hopefully.
... To be continued..
+Pretty unlikely thing to happen, but I thought it'd be pretty interesting anyways.
+I figure Mathkr don't bother with Alkahest much, if they've even encountered it much. I reckon the Envoys never showed up in Skeggr turf to begin with, let alone on Jötnagröf. But keeping with themes of things that should probably stay buried in a deep freeze, I figured maybe one of the Giant corpses may have been one previously associated with Alkahest. Again, probably unlikely, but I enjoy these hypotheticals. :3
+I imagine there's a vague overlap with Skeggr language and Matkr language. If not, it was the only thing I could come up with for how Nihilus could communicate lol
+I'm making a pretty big assumption but from what you described, their massive "Cold Forges" are found uniquely in each Giant corpse. When a new corpse is burrowed into, a new cold forge is made. Of course I could be wrong but that's what it sounded like, and I could be misunderstanding if they've dug into all the giants yet or nah.
+Seeing how Alkahest kinda just generally ruins anything it touches, I imagine even the alien cold forging could be mucked up by its unintentional inclusion.
+If you're wondering why they used Nihilus for anything instead of a Mathkr, let's just say he was both durable and expendable. Why waste a construct/flesh-thing/fellow maggot man when this oddly durable looking human thing is right there?
+I dunno if Mathkr are fond of giving gifts to one another as thanks or signs of friendship/adoration, but for such an industrious species, they struck me as the sorts. As for Nihilus, he sure as heck ain't gonna be swinging Bell's Gift around willy-nilly, that's an 'desperate times for desperate measures' weapon. Not cuz he distrusts it, he just knows the kinda folks who really want an authentic Mathkr weapon. .3.
+I imagine the Mathkr can produce constructs that can fly, swim, and dig. The first being the way they escort people off the island when they lack a vessel, I bet. Kinda like how Antiquaries use Janggans, just less flashy.
+Lastly, Freezemohr is an isolated little Northern fishing port town, with an expansive population of 12 adults and 3 kids. A good as place as ever to be dropped off on the mainland.
+Anyway, that's enough for now. Sorry if it dragged on a bit. .3.

Oooo, Nihilus gets to meet the Mathkr! Even though he clearly didn't want this meeting! Screwed over by a liar of a captain, but thankfully Nil made it through uneaten! Was worried for a second there, though, when the Makthr asked if he was durable! Though maybe the immortal was about have his title tested by Mathkr weapons! Thankfully something far more benign! Helping figure out failing weapons and cleaning out a forge! Though I am sure that smell was something terrible after diving into the gut crucible! Oof! A wonderful little tale!

"There were Giants, in those distant, elder days."
The Mathkr worked, and he waited. Such was the agreement. All he had sacrificed, all he had given up, all he had gathered... For Stórrekkr.
He was one of the few still living, untouched by the Rot of the Visindakkona, and he served well. He served for what else was there? Stagnancy of the elders whose words were wind, and whose whiskers frayed and split could never support the links of their people any longer.
Or so he had believed. He had gathered these at the request of his master. The Horn of Dragon, the Milk of Abomination, the Eye of Basilisk, the Hair of Oliphant, the Bone of Giant, Amber of a tree touched in Blood and Miren, a Sliver of Vile Red, and on the black crystal were the recorded whispers of termites in their nests.
All the materials they would need, save the one final ingredient he had finally acquired for their horrid game of search and retrieve he had suffered across the land, especially the Milk... He would never wish to gaze upon thorns again in his life.
The Mathkr worked, and he waited here in the cold for long hours already. Soon, they would finish the tool, the weapon. They had the small satchel he had killed dozens for, bargained for, and even chased across the land of Smoke and Spice.
Powdered Cosmic Eggshell. Only a smidgen, but even that held power.
And he would be faced with a choice, ensure damnation for his people, or their salvation. He did not know which. He gazed to the dozens of giants within the glaciers around him, their frozen visages unable to be fully seen, and yet...
He felt judgement. They were his peoples ancestors, and he felt the weight of his actions through their gazes. 'Child of Giants... Defiler.'
'Filth... Disappointment...'
And the one that hurt worst, the one that hurt because it was what he believed he was fighting against what his culture was becoming.
'Enslaved...'
He was broken from his thoughts by a touch to his back hair, jumping as he turned to see a Mathkr holding something in a leather bundle, the leather steaming in the cold from the heat of whatever was inside. It was oddly shaped, lumpy, and nearly three arm spans long, and half an arm span wide.
It clicked at him, it's masked face already moving away from him in the blizzard. He stared at the bundle in his arms, the solid hot object far lighter than it should be, unsettling him. He considered as he walked to the longship at the icy shoreline. Should he return to Stórrekkr?
His crew was loyal him, in their travels half-way around the world, far more than they were to Stórrekkr, having been away and only recently returned to see this truly horrendous corpse army he puppeted. Should he bring... whatever this was, to that would-be Rotten King? Could Stórrekkr be trusted with whatever power lay within his hands, burning and vibrating as his thoughts churned.
Or...
Or should he take it himself?
By the days end, the Mathkr had crafted the assigned item, and done it in exchange for the materials brought to make it, in exchange for one thing.
They crafted something truly marvelous. The bones of an ancient dragon formed its base, yet it was augmented by the poison alkahest, shining. In a scaffolds around it, slowly growing like crystal in a mesh in a small spot, was a chunk Comic Egg Shell, half the powder used to craft the item, the other half for this, to begin the transmutation process into special armor plating for this automated wonder. It would grow along the mesh, and be slowly shaped and ground until it was all a cohesive whole. An outer skin layer, within which would be poured the mixture that would give it life.
But that was for the future. For now, there was work to be done.
Patience was a virtue after all.

Incredible writing! One of Stórrekkr followers seeking the Mathkr for some strange creation! But it seems even his faith in his leader has become shaken, seeing the Rot he has succumbed to. What has been born from the Mathkr forges? What is this creation he has worked so hard for? Ooooo, a tantalizing tale!
