Description
The thick jungles of the southern lands are a wonder. Where plant and fungus grow to towering heights and life is so abundant it threatens to choke the very air. A world of layers, almost rivaling the depths below, where most creatures never even set foot on land for their entire existence. Even the people of this land live amongst the layers and atop the great branches and blooms. Cities built in the sky, villages woven around trunk and stalk. It is truly a wonder, yet one must never forget the strict rules of this world. Nature and its many lands hold plenty of marvels, but just as many dangers as well.
A well known beast of these tropical lands is the Jungle Devil. It is probably its relation to the Swamp Devil that makes it common knowledge to the people of the Church's rule who have never traveled to such humid regions. So much of its form is familiar to the bog dwelling leech beasts, but it has chosen to wield its rubbery limbs in a different way. While Swamp Devils attack from below, the Jungle Devil is a terror that strikes from above.
They dwell in the upper layers of these jungles, clinging to branches with their two tentacle arms and single tail. They spend a good chunk of their time in waiting, picking locations where they have a clear view of the lower levels. They are ambush hunters, hiding up high for the moment prey wanders beneath them. When their large eyes spot a viable meal, their arms let go and they plummet. Jungle Devils strike from far above, like a bird of prey diving down. Yet, they are not in complete free fall, as their tail remains firmly anchored to the branch. With a paralyzing shriek, they drop down onto prey, grabbing hold with their arms. They seek simply to seize, for they only have a few moments to grab their prize. This is because their tails are incredibly elastic, stretching to absurd lengths before snapping back to its original form. Jungle Devils use this energy to pull prey back upwards with them, carrying them into the green heavens above. Right to their doom.
The hunt of a Jungle Devil is a terrifyingly short one, for prey is pulled up into the layers above in the blink of an eye. Once captured and suspended in the air with the wretched screaming beast, its mouth full of fangs quickly tear into flesh. Like Swamp Devils, they feast on Blood, and thus target areas of the body where it is thickest. Their lips suction onto the body while the teeth gnaw away, leaving gushing wounds for them to suckle. Prey may struggle, but the rubbery flesh of these creatures resist many attacks. Plus, breaking free from their hold means a different demise, as you will simply plummet back down to the layers below. Either you break upon a branch, or you have the misfortune of smashing through the last few layers and hitting the forest floor. In these thick jungles, choked with life, what reaches the very bottom never returns...
Just like Swamp Devils, their jungle brethren are feared by locals and outsiders alike. Their ambushes can be hard to spot, as often climbers and travelers are more focused on their footing. The terrible screams they unleash as they drop chill to the bone and often freezes prey in its tracks. And then it is all over in an instant. A travel companion suddenly pulled into the leaves and blooms far above, with only a few moments to scream til it is ended in a sickening gurgle. Their drained body may come crashing down minutes later, but often people don't wait around that long. Instead, terrified souls return with tales of fellows who vanished into thin area, yanked into the heavens and never seen again.
