Description
Experimentation is key when it comes to the Academy's methods. You never know if something is going to work or not unless you dare to try it. No Alchemist worth their salt would ever give up on the first failed try or refuse to attempt the impossible. There are always new formulas to try, different methods, improved timings and what-not that can change the outcome. For making homunculi, there is the attempt to perfect the old formula, on top of testing out new fluids to see how they affect the final product. Making an artificial human is certainly a wonderful goal, but what if you could birth a dragon? Or perhaps something else entirely?
As the Alchemists threw in new fluids and different combinations to make homunculi, it could already be seen that they would eventually try out the most mysterious ingredient of all: Pwdre Ser. That strange purple goo that has started falling from the heavens, the one that has been dubbed the "Rot of Stars." Once a thing of myth, chalked up to over-imaginative minds and cheeky hoaxes, but now coming to this world in rare starfalls. The few patches of land it has fallen upon are now avoided by many, some towns even evacuated when the purple wept upon their homes. As these instances have slowly grown, the Academy turned to their Astrologers to research and master this new fluid. Though the Astrologers are indeed now the inarguable experts of Pwdre Ser, it should be noted that that title comes mainly from the fact that no one else knows a lick of it. And one would say that the Astrologers are far from experts on this strange new fluid. Listen to them speak of Pwdre Ser, and you will hear wonder, curiosity and fear in their voice...
Though the Astrologers and the Academy still struggle to understand the Rot of Stars, that only means that more research must be done, more experiments must be performed. The Alchemists figured that the homunculus process was a good way to test some of Pwdre Ser's capabilities, and they brought in the Astrologers to collaborate on a new formula. Getting it all to work was quite difficult, and the recipe took dozens of tries to even show the slightest signs of life. But eventually, a new kind of homunculus was born from these experiments and the Academy was astounded at what emerged.
The first entity, dubbed the "cosmunculus," that was born from this infusion of Pwdre Ser was a small misshapen thing. It bore some resemblance to the original homunculi, diminutive in size with large heads and long tails. But this being was more formed, its skin not wet and sagging, and clear organs seen through its hide. The crude precursors to a skeleton could be seen, and it appeared more aware and intelligent than the other little ones. The main thing that threw the Alchemists for a loop was the fact it floated. Obviously born from its ties to Pwdre Ser, the cosmunculus didn't walk or skitter, but floated through the air as if it was a fish in water. Not only that, but it seemed to be able to move things with its mind, as objects of interest floated into its tendrils and tail, and it would slowly accumulate a hanging halo of knickknacks around its body. The Alchemists were quick to test its capabilities and mind, running it through a bunch of simple tests to gauge its potential. When the cosmunculus passed these trials well above the standard of even the refined homunculi, the Academy celebrated. At last, progress!
With the cosmunculus showing the capacity to learn and its strange mental abilities, the Alchemists were quick to whip up some more of them. A dozen or so of them were born in preparation of more tests and research, but by the time they emerged, the original suddenly changed. One day, it ignored its commands and sealed itself in its cage. The Alchemists only observed in curiosity as it altered its body into a cocoon, and suddenly went still. Sensing that something was growing within, they left it be with constant surveillance to see what came from it. After only a few days, the cocoon rapidly swelled in size, eventually ripping open to reveal a larger, more humanoid cosmunculus. It was another breakthrough, as this entity had even more of a skeleton and refined organs. Its long tentacle arms were quite dexterous and good at manipulating objects. Once again, it faced tests that were meant for refined homunculi and passed with flying colors. It was a genius compared to those dimwitted meat bags. The Academy was certain that they had at last discovered the secret of perfect homunculi, proven even more right when the other cosmunculi underwent a similar metamorphosis. Talk was underway about how to move forward, countless ideas spilling out as they tried to fathom the potential at hand. And then... it was over.
One day, the Academy was practically hollering from the spineridges about their breakthrough, but the next day there was only silence. Outsiders who inquired about progress were simply told that it was a failure, a freak fluke that had offered false hope. The cosmunculi were not viable and the old formula was worthless. When one pressed about what the next step was, vague excuses were given. Not enough resources, Pwdre Ser is too rare to waste like this, we don't have the right equipment. Odd words coming from the Academy, who stops at nothing to get answers and results. Eventually, tongues would loosen and stolen records would be deciphered. And folks would learn that the cosmunculi project came to an end when the Academy rounded up every single one of these promising entities and promptly executed them. Cut down in a single strike and their melting bodies carted off to secret labs unknown. From then on, Pwdre Ser was never added to the homunculi formula.
Notes from this brief window of time would emerge at some point, and folks would get a glimpse at what went down within that Academy lab. For a while, it was only positive. Scribbles of excitement at the potential of these cosmunculi, words of praise as they passed tests and showed off their abilities. But then it would slowly turn, and the notes would take a different tone. The cosmunculi would not stay in their cells, they would wind up where they weren't allowed. Equipment would go missing, fluids would be tainted with violet clots. Experiments started going wrong, and sabotage was suspected. One cosmunculi walked right into a lab where test animals were kept and promptly killed every one of them. It was caught trying to drag the corpses back to its cell. From that point, all the cosmunculi were locked up in their cages until more research could be done. But it didn't work. They kept getting out. No matter how many locks, bars or walls they put up, the entities would simply vanish from their rooms and appear in restricted areas of the Academy. Commands stopped working, and strange phenomenon started occur around the labs. Details from that point to their execution have still not been revealed, but something went down one day that had one of the top Academy leaders call for the immediate culling of these entities.
To this day, it is said that not a single cosmunculus has been born since that incident. The Academy continues to avoid that type of creation in their quest for perfect artificial life. Research into Pwdre Ser still goes on, and the Astrologers are driven more and more to figure out what lies within this goo. It is not like the Academy to give up on a project, but something about those entities has stayed their hand. The Alchemists will say that they are sticking to the theoretical until better equipment and Pwdre Ser research is available, but there is something else beneath it all. They would say that they are not ready yet to work with such a subject, not until there is better understanding. It may seem laughable, a failure to tease the Academy with, but as people look up to the heavens to see that purple rain fall upon the world, some may wonder if any of us are ready....

Now that we've made some homunculi with Eitr and Pwdre Ser, what would happen if we create a new one with Ichor and Alkahest?

Certainly an interesting question, if one could get Alkahest to not dissolve everything it touches!

Such cool lil guys! O-oh, then big guys. The story behind them is quite curious, and I am given inspiration!!
“Pwdre Ser… The Rot of the Stars… A horrid invader, spoken of in whispers and hisses. The Astrologers of the Academy are obsessed with it. I would call them fools tampering with a force they don’t understand, but then again I am a walking freakshow because I did the exact same thing. Jerikoh Marr is many things, but a hypocrite isn’t one of them. I had flew too close to the sun I obsessed over, and walked away like this. Granted, I’ve made it work out for me, but I cannot deny that I’ve made… Miscalculations. But speaking of miscalculations, I heard the Academy made quiiiite the blunder once, something about a homunculus type of an experimental variety. I didn’t think much of it, as apparently it had happened before I was anywhere close to the Academy, but recently I’ve been given a reason to think. Apparently, those maniacs decided adding Pwdre Ser to the Refined Homunculus formula was a good idea! It went sideways, for one reason or another, and they were all destroyed. The homunculi, not the Academy personnel. Still, I hope they learned their lesson about such an invention. Risks like that are best untaken!
Of course, I don’t know why I thought they’d listen to themselves.
I had taken another request from the Academy in exchange for a mountain of Humor Hypos. My, how generous of them, I had just run out! Of course I knew this was fishy. The Astrologist sought me out specifically, which meant this was a trap, I figured. Yet she showed up to the meeting point in the middle of the night, outside of an Academy town. She handed me a kennel usually used to hold small animals and was given a list of ‘dos and do-nots’ with the thing. I asked what it was and she told me not to look unless necessary. Alright, alright. I got half of the Hypos now and apparently would be given the rest later. That was certainly the correct way to ensure I’d follow through, so she did research on UHA agents to know that. ‘Pay us up front and you’ll guarantee a completion’ is a common United Hunter policy, yknow? Thus, under starlight, I began to move this sensitive cargo to an unassuming location in the Spindlewood Forest (which was quite far away). Eventually, though, the cargo got a little restless and began making a ruckus in the back of my cart. (Ah, right, I borrowed a cart for the mission which I stuffed with random common goods to disguise the kennel as unimportant. Forgot to mention that.) Outcast was definitely curious, and so was I. Thus I carefully opened the door, and within… Oh, by the Ichor’s Golden Glow… A Cosmunculus..! I closed the door then opened it again to make sure my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me. Nope. That thing matched the poster I saw in an Academy Bounty Office. Over 1,000,000 Dennars if you report a true Cosmunculus sighting, that’s what the poster said, and it showed a picture of this small thing. They must have a good reason for posting such a reward for one of these abominations… According to decoded reports, they were all destroyed, and the posters were for if a rogue Astrologist or Alchemist got any funny ideas of resurrecting the project. I could scarcely believe I had been roped into such a hairbrained scheme! I heard the last time an Alchemist tried making a Cosmunculus, the Academy sent 20 Surgeons after the guy! TWENTY! AT ONCE! And he hadn’t even fully formed the blighted thing yet! This one looked at me with its single glowing eye, but unlike with Ari and Culus who’s looks inspired a sense of innocence, there was a degree of… Of knowing behind that eye. I shuddered inside and out and ‘fed’ it one of the hypos I was given specifically for it then closed the door again. When I went back to my seat, I looked over and… THERE IT WAS. IT WAS OUT OF THE KENNEL, SITTING NEXT TO ME! I let out an undignified yelp and fell off the cart, the Cosmunculus simply floating over to look down at me. How did it..?! I checked and the kennel door was still closed. HUUUUUH?!?!?!? I tried to gently put it back, but within a few moments it was back where I moved it from. ARRRGH! What was I supposed to do?! This wasn’t in the ‘to-dos and to-don’ts’ list! I tried to remain calm and set it back inside the cart at least, then let Culus and Ari loose. The two imps began playing with the Cosmunculus which did manage to keep it in one place.
A few days passed. While the Cosmunculus was indeed cute and kinda growing on me, I couldn’t shake the feeling of dread. The academy is nuts in pursuit of knowledge. I’ve only known them to cancel a project when Rot REALLY hits the turbine, and they went so far as to cull every Cosmunculus then ban the creation of more. To ban an Academian from doing something… Well you might as well tell a fish not to swim! Perhaps that’s how I ended up here in this situation. I reached the destination and was met by a burned down cabin. Ah Blighted sweat, now what?! Turns out, there was an Academy killsquad there and they had burned the cabin to the ground. When they spotted me, they accused me of being a co-conspirator and demanded I surrender. For once, I did. Listen, there were 30 of them and one of me, and my steed was weighed down by a cart. Fleeing wasn’t in the cards here, not without abandoning Marrow... And we all know I'd never do that. They searched my cart top to bottom while I was held nearby, and I was sure I’d be nailed… But nope, they didn’t find the Cosmunculus. Wot? I was thoroughly interrogated by the resident Alchemist, but my poker face and acting skills preserved me. I was naught but a simple merchant, and I was sent to the location to deliver my goods. It helped that all the cargo I had was simple living supplies such as food and water, plus a small chest of Dennars, and I was wearing Wastelander attire as a disguise. While my cart was confiscated, I was allowed to leave with Marrow and Outcast in tow. Needless to say I got the Hell outta Durge, and eventually I stopped to check my bag. Son of a Pox, the Cosmunculus was in there. How and when..? Whatever. I assumed my contact was either very dead or very arrested and I wasn’t getting that other half of Hypos. I wanted to get rid of this thing, but I’m sure Ari and Culus would never forgive me if I just killed it or abandoned it. I wasn’t gonna keep it, no thanks! I am NOT fighting 20 Surgeons of Slaughter at once! What to do, what to do… Ah!
I ended up in Allister’s Aegis, many many many miles away from Academy turf. Specifically, I went to my sister Midiyorah’s workshop. She was happy to see me as always, though she was curious why I’d show up unannounced. That’s when I handed her the Cosmonculus. She unsurprisingly recognized it, but she was definitely more curious than afraid or cautious. After I explained the situation, she decided she’d watch over it. ‘I shall name him Wish. Get it? ‘Cuz, stars and stuff?’ Never change, Midi. I prayed it wouldn’t cause her problems, and she assured me she could handle herself. While I didn’t doubt that, I was still worried. Pwdre Ser wasn’t something to underestimate, that’s how the horror’s ancestors came about in the first place… Not in a hurry to find out what might happen, but Midi is a smart cookie, so I trusted she could do the right thing if push came to shove. Before I left, I glanced back to see Wish hovering around Midiyorah, observing her as she set him up a nice living space. I’d definitely be checking back a few more times while I was in the area… ~Jerikoh Marr, Self-Questioning Fugitive.”

Yep, Pwdre Ser is a strange but dangerous fluid. One that should be approached with caution, or perhaps avoided entirely until more can be learned from it. The Astrologers do their best, but it is a new thing to this world, and a potent one at that. Their creation of the Cosmunculus was a risky experiment, and it is clear that they realized it was too much to handle. But of course, you will get outliers like the one who hired Jerikoh that will try again regardless! What they attempted to achieve, we shall never know, as the Academy was quick to silence that! But now that cosmunculus is still around. Do be sure to keep a close eye on it! There is something very strange about them, and they aren't as innocent and childish as the other little homunculi...
Also good to meet another member of the Marr family!
