Description

The wondrous Humors bring much to this world, all thanks to the glorious Ichor from the heavens. They provide comfort and warmth, energy and purpose. They are imbibed, anointed and used in many ways. All who call this land home partake in this great communion, worshiping the fluids in one way or another. They are the core of everything, and thus the people have learned so much about them, and evolved new ways to utilize them. In the early days, it was simple things like cooking food or ingesting them outright. But now, with so much time and understanding, glorious things have been unlocked with these fluids. The power to better see, to better heal. The power to transform, and to even create life.

The core of it all is made of Black Bile, the ebony fluid that holds knowledge and encourages intellect. It didn't take long for folk to understand how to use this liquid and its crystals to store information, creating glittering libraries of darkened stone. But then, one would eventually wonder: if this fluid can hold knowledge and information, could it also use them? And thus the spark of curiosity set forth a blaze, and from these fires of innovation came the bone-bile constructs. Entities of ebony and ivory, given life and drive from the fluid that pumps through their frames. When one boils it all down, it is just simple information given a body. A set of commands and actions with limbs and joints. They were built with a purpose, a job, and with unending determination, they will complete it.

Bone-bile constructs are exactly what they sound, automatons that are crafted from bone and filled with inscribed Black Bile to give them function. Once their veins and core are engorged, a simple spark of energy is needed to activate them and thus life is born. However, many would argue on how much "life" these beings actually have. These constructs may move like a living being, but they are very simple minded and know little else outside their task. Obviously, these bony machines were made for the purpose of servitude and labor, performing tasks that require more strength and less thinking than a normal human has. They are used in construction, hauling, harvesting and other menial labors. As some folk would put it "they are for the tasks that a child could understand but couldn't do."

In the early days of their creation, bone-bile constructs were rare, but time and learning has made them more plentiful in the world. They are not uncommon, nearly to the point where every village has at least one. Their numbers in a settlement is one way to measure their wealth, for the more ivory servants they have, the better off they are. Those in the big cities are practically faceless and nameless, just another worker making everything function. But in small villages, their single automaton is eventually viewed as another member of the community. They are given a name, a simple shelter to call "home" and are treated warmly despite their inability to properly reciprocate it. These individuals wind up becoming more versatile and handy then their big city brethren, as they are enlisted for wider variety of tasks and jobs.

While the constructs are mainly used for labor, there are certainly those designed for defense and battle. They can be used as simple, but intimidating, guards, wielders of heavy armaments and operators of devastating siege weapons. Due to their simple nature, their orders tend to be brief and straightforward. Load the catapult. Place the barricade. Crush everything that isn't wearing red. Generals favor these constructs for their strength and lack of morals, never questioning orders and executing any foe without a hint of mercy. However, their use in war and protection is limited by their intellect and blunt interpretations. Those tasked with guarding an area must be given the most precise yet simplest order to properly do their job. Any exceptions or fancy words leave it up to their interpretation, which can go sour when you least expect it and very much when you don't want it. A construct tasked with "preventing anyone from entering" will stand uselessly if an enemy is "exiting" the premise with stolen goods in hand. Horror stories tell of fools who had to dismantle their constructs when they ordered them to react to "suspicious behavior."

Since all that is required is a bone crafted frame and properly inscribed Black bile, these automaton can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Those in labor tend to be simple yet sturdy, while those at war boast chitin plating and heavy bone shells to protect their veins and joints. Nearly every faction of man uses bone-bile constructs in some regards, though their rank tends to be low in larger organizations. This is because they wind up being out-competed by other automatons built with the same philosophy. The Wax Effigies of the Church are far smarter, while the likes of dracomatons at the Academy have greater power and defense. Many creations outrank and outclass them, yet these constructs remain steady. Simplicity is always appreciated, and if it gets the job done, then that is good enough for most common folk.

Okay, how about a little break from the dragons for a moment? That isn't to say I am out of dragon stuff, I just feel like we need a bit of breather? So how about a bone bot?
