Description
* "Planetronika", Pilot and Concept Created by Rafael Andaya...

Didn't you expect me to jump on the bandwagon of this charming streetwise girl? Well, neither did I. "Planetronika" is a recent pilot by independent animator Rafael Andaya, who already has a solid track record on platforms like YouTube. His work is notable for its 90s and especially 2000s animation influences, which are evident in his aforementioned idea and concept. It features a stylized retro-toon style that incorporates elements of light science fiction, streetwise humor, and a good mix of American and Japanese influences. The short's co-star, Butterfly, is currently stealing the show online.
I'm telling you this from a personal perspective: I missed this style, even though I grew up in the 2000s with some pretty "nostalgia-obsessed" people who criticized this Retro-Toon style of simple stylization, thick lines, and emphasis on the appeal of designs by people born in the 90s, and then going back and forth, and, you know, generational battles never end, to the point that it's not even worth arguing about. It's better to just enjoy various things regardless of their era. But curiously, it seems that several generations united against many stylistic proposals imposed since the 2010s. To summarize and avoid conflicts over sensitive topics, we can say that when they introduced ideological and sociopolitical elements based on the mentality of a certain type of person who lives in a bubble and wants to attract attention or impose their worldview, that resulted in a "Enough is enough" moment. This also gave a slap of reality to the big companies that are now... They're restructuring to avoid falling so easily into those old tricks, thinking that's how they'll attract a new audience.
"Planetronika" is reminiscent of those series launched in the mid-2000s (Butterfly's design is quite reminiscent of characters like Eloise Riffler from the cult series "Street Football") where the goal wasn't narrative or ideological grandiosity: just entertainment. And if the series manages to have a future, it can address themes in its own way without underestimating its audience or preaching to them, as several works or adaptations have accustomed us to, ultimately doing more harm than good to art and entertainment. It's a very welcome breath of fresh air, where, once again, independent projects are something that even the biggest companies and studios need to pay more attention to, and stop thinking like their executives with their ties so tight they don't get enough oxygen to their brains to think beyond dividends.
