Golden Argiope — Description
The Golden Argiope is a species closely related to those on the mainlands who continue to build webs in trees as a hunting method. However, they are larger and of a darker hue (males are far smaller with less coloration.) They prefer dark, damp places deep within the Scritean Woodlands, hanging near-invisible nets across trees. These thin nets cannot trap bats, but are well-suited for ensnaring small flying insects such as nyoia beetles, doma bees, arga, cyclopsias, and flies. Golden Argiopes are often eaten by lesser ghameles, who lash out with their long tongues to grab spiders out of their webs. The ghameles are immune to their venom, but remain their only predator. Venom is used only in self-defense, not attack, as these are a sedentary species. Breeding season takes place in late spring, where the males build a companion web aside hers and they mate. They can lay up to 2000 eggs a batch, encapsulated within a thick eggsac. No further parental care is provided after hatching, they will set off to build their own web and will remain so until winter, when it gets a bit chilly and they become less active.
