Description
Wreck-it Ralph coloring book challenge for: !The challenge of the contest was to take a regular old run-of-the-mill coloring book page for kids and transform it into something special. I chose this one for Wreck-it Ralph because it seemed like something that could be turned into a moody painting like the artists of yesterday.
My inspirational artist was Vermeer , and I managed to squeeze in all the coloring of the rainbow for extra points at the contest.
Back in 2012 we had the same contest at the group and it took forever for me to do my entries because I did them with so many layers in Photoshop. So this time I did this on only a few layers and saved a ton of time. Plus I've just gotten better of course. My how time flies!
My other entry this year:

Aww, poor Ralph, he's looking a bit sad. It's very well done, his hands in particular have a 3D look to them. I wish I could colour like that.

This is just amazing. I love the feel of this. It's almost like you can totaly tell what ralph is thinking and feeling without having to ask him. Great job.

This scene is actually sad and maybe you would expect some cool colours. But your Vermeer choice is original and the palette is warmer there I like the ligh coming from the right and the background in particolar
they both give a special touch.

I really like the melancholy feel of this picture! Vermeer is a perfect choice with his chiaroscuro-- the dark hues convey a very moody atmosphere. I really like the subtle lighting on his hair and the shading on his face. Those extra details catch the viewer's eye and bring the picture to life.

Poor Ralph.
I think your choice of color and artistic inspiration fit perfectly with the character. The shapes and colors look great.

Very nice! I like how you worked all of the rainbow colors in and still kept to the muted colors! Lovely work!

coming back a few days later to comment again on this -was in a hurry the other day- to say that, beside the fact that you did awesome with Vermeer's style and contrasts, I really like how you've kept the square shapes that give Ralph such instantly recognizable features...

Good placement of lights and shadows.Β Really like the texture on the skin.Β Makes it look more like a traditional painting than Photoshop.

Whoa, this almost looks like a real painting! Your skills are something to be admired greatly! I just love that layer of scratchiness in your work, it makes the painting look traditional. And the shading! Man The hightlights don't look smooth (which is the point
) but it just fits perfectly! Good luck in the contest, you are very talented!

This turned out wonderful! Β It does feel very "moody". Β When I did my coloring page I had so many layers in Photoshop! Β So congrats on keeping the number of layers down.

this is really gorgeous I love how well you've re-created Vermeer's chiaroscuro (dunno if my spelling is right) and the peacefully melancholy of this...

Aww Ralph. I recognized your style from your 2012 entries! They were some of my favorites, as I have to admit that this is one of this years favorites, too! The color pallets you choose are remarkable and really speak of the character. The texture you used in this is just really appealing to the overall look of the piece. Great job!

"Sometimes...sometimes I really don't wanna wreck it."
*a single tear goes down Ralph's face as violin plays in the background*
I really like the choice of closing his eyes. And how you managed to make the WIR coloring book (which always looked kind of off to me, as far as the characters were concerned) look really convincing with just a couple well-placed shadows. He almost looks like a solumn statue with that kind of shading too.

This pose actually reminded me of the "Thinking Man" when I first saw it. Β I like the textures you added too, it gives it a much more old-fashioned feel. Β I'm surprised you were able to mimic Vermeer so well since his forms are usually so rounded and Ralph is very square.
