Victory.Nick didn't know this kind of victory. Winning was supposed to be a rush, to be uplifting. Not bitter. Not empty.
Not unbearable.
Only that basic human need to survive kept him walking toward the helicopter in the distance, an all too familiar and bloodstained cap lying on the steps behind him.
A terrible burden weighed heavily in his chest, stealing any relief from his angry, haunted eyes. The cost was too high. He'd won, but the cost was too damn high...
