Myla dreaded the day she had to return to school. This was her last day of freedom before she had to enter the wooden doors of studying and hell. School bored her. She'd rather be out riding her horse, Sunny.
She just got Sunny this summer. Her parents purchased her for Myla. She was a beautiful blue with glistening golden spots. She adored Sunny's peppy spirit. They got along quite well. Myla would spend hours in the barn, brushing Sunny out and just spending time with her.
She didn't get to ride her a whole lot because her parents insisted on "parental supervision" at all times. But the instructor at South RidgeRunner Stables wasn't there everyday. She worked at several barns. So Myla couldn't ride as much as she really wanted to.
Today was going to be one of those days too, it seemed. The instructor wasn't there again...
Myla pouted in Sunny's stall. Didn't anybody understand this was her last day of freedom before homework was piled onto her 14 year old shoulders!?
Sunny could see her little human's frustration. She didn't know why but she felt bummed out for her too. She didn't get to spend a lot of time with her little one but she had grown quite attached to her. She was fun and liked to do silly things with Sunny. Not like the other sticks in the mud around the stables that were only interested in top-level showing or some ridiculous competition. Myla liked to goof off and have fun! Sunny liked that! (It kind of meant less work for Sunny too).
Myla hopped out of the stall for a moment and looked up and down the barn aisle. She slowly leaned back in the stall with a devious grin, "Ya knoooow.... no on is around....sooooo....maybe know has to know?"
Sunny leaned closer to her human, 'This will be good! We'll do something fun for sure!'
Myla slid Sunny's stall door open and grabbed a little bit of her mane, "C'mon Sunny! Be quiet though! We can't let anyone find out!"
Sunny nicked quietly and plodded behind her little human.
Myla led her outside to the gate to the desert outside of the barn. It was a nice warm day as usual without a cloud in sight. The South RidgeRunner Stables was completely surrounded by desert dunes with occasional oasis spots. Myla knew where one was and got to take Sunny there a couple times. She knew no one would be there at this time of the day. It was near lunch time so no one was really around to see!
Myla climbed on the gate and hopped on Sunny sans saddle or bridle. She was confident enough that she didn't need one! She had ridden her this way before in the arena under her instructor's tutelage.
She bumped her heels on Sunny's sides and off they went into the desert!
Sunny happily bounced along in the sand. She liked the heat of the desert. It warmed her toes and belly. She especially liked playing in the oasis pools! It was cool, spring water.
Once they were at the oasis, Myla insisted on goofing around. Her and Sunny raced around the pool and weaved the few trees that managed to grow around the pool. She would sit backwards on Sunny's back and give silly commands. Sunny gleefully responded and felt like a filly again.
Myla caught sight of a fallen log. She had seen people jump their horses before. It looked like a lot of fun. She had asked her instructor if they could but she didn't think Myla was quite ready. Myla snorted, "I can do it. It's not that big of a deal. It's just a log."
Myla bumped her heels hard into Sunny's side.
Sunny sighed and stepped into an easy lope. 'Uuuuuuuuggghhh....wooooork....'
Myla ribbed her again to get a little more speed out of her.
Sunny did as the little one asked. She guessed they were racing the ghost Thoroughbreds again. She sped up, hoping they were racing Seabiscuit again! She knew something was different when she felt Myla lean a lot more forward than usual.
Sunny looked ahead and saw the log. Her brain started to connect the dots. 'Wait! Am I supposed to jump over that!? It's like eight feet tall! I can't jump that! I've never jumped in my life! What if I trip over it a kill us both! NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE!' Sunny hit the brakes hard before the log.
She saw the cloud of sand along with Myla hurl into the air in front of her.
Myla felt Sunny stop underneath her but it was too late. She was already leaned forward. She might as well have jumped off of Sunny's back. She sailed through the air and rolled into the deep sand.
She sat up and spit the gritty sand from her mouth. She had been lucky and landed on her butt first somehow. She groaned and looked up to see Sunny looking over her.
Myla's last lesson for the summer was...horseback riding is a team effort. Just because you think you can do it, doesn't mean your mount is thinking the same thing....
Sunny's last lesson for the summer was...humans can be worn as hats...

Yea! Art!
So I had this sketched out a while ago but I didn't have a horse picked out until Sunny came along! She fit perfect xD She's too lazy (and self-conscious) to do something as easy as lifting her legs up eight more inches... No riders or horses were harmed in the making of this unfortunate event xD We've all been there - done something we were told not to for the sake of proving them wrong! Thankfully, sometimes you can do that in private and NEVER admit it to anyone ever again lol
